Monster band tiki-mugs

Vern sez, "I've been a fan of both the Polynesian tiki scene, and the bubblegum music scene, which often featured studio musicians providing the music for a cartoon band. Those two worlds intersect with a new set of mugs from Tiki Farm - Rigor Morty and the Dirt Nappers. I just received my set, in time for Halloween, and they are sweet. The tallest mug is 9 inches tall. As the Tiki Farm website says - pour yourself a zombie .... in a zombie!"

I love Tiki Farm mugs in general, but this is the very best set I've ever seen. Wow!

Rigor Marty and the Dirt Nappers! (Thanks, Vern!)

I want this just because it's the only band ever headlined by the bass player.

I just wanted to say that I ordered from Tiki Farm just a couple of weeks ago and found that my mugs (not this particular set) were very well made and have already taken some beatings from my 2 year old kid and survived.

I highly endorse this service or product.

So cool that Fender made sure the instruments are nice replicas. I agree with #2, bass players up front Rule! How about Thin Lizzy and Primus #5?

I love this set! As a musician, I really appreciate the detail on these instruments. Morty has a Fender P-Bass, Rob is playing a Fender Stratocaster and Ed is holding a Fender Telecaster. Was Fender really involved? If so that would explain the price.

Also @2: Lemmy (Motorhead), Mr. Sting (Police), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Sir Paul (Wings)...

The Other Ones also have a very nice Tiki Farm mug, though not as monster-delic as these!

In keeping with the ghoulish theme, though not the musical one, Munktiki also has some great demon, skull and monster mugs and shots.

I was checking out the tiki mug links in a thread a few days back, and mostly just ended up bewildered. What exactly defines the tiki aesthetic? I had assumed that, you know, they would depict tikis. Seems like the only real continuity of style is "disproportionately large head." If that's yer yardstick, then Hello Kitty merch is all tiki as well.
Not trying to be super snarky here, I'm actually really curious. When did the Polynesian (or Trader Vic kitsch version thereof) influence vanish from the tiki scene? What's it about now?

(I'm Anon #2) I really meant bands named in the form of "Bassplayer McAwesome and the Less Important Remainder." Impressive list though; Primus FTW.

If you look at the resurgent Tiki mug movement, you'll notice that the predominance of designs are indeed "Tiki" but it's become more of an art movement with modern era lowbrow artists giving the design element "a spin" - much a kin to how Ed Roth & Rick Griffin & Robert Williams approached and treated their art.

The old original heyday Tiki mugs of the 1950's and 1960's were produced moreover for 1 purpose - function and low cost. There were indeed exceptions like Stephen Crane (Luau Restaurant) & the Island in Stockton, for example.

I own Tiki Farm & decided to go through our 10 main mug pages and came up with the following...
of the 50 designs in total intended as "Tiki", 30 of those are absolutely Tiki and the remaining 20 are interpretations. Those 30 are indicative of the old stylings but are completely unique and that is a good & necessary thing.

To replicate old designs would be counter productive as we are a design house. Only the most special vintage mugs should be reproduced identically and only with the consent of the correct people from a standpoint of intellectual property rights.
