Neuros open set-top box lets you crowd-subtitle the presidential debate

Joe sez, "Neuros has a new technology to superimpose text from a dedicated chat room in real time on a TV set, allowing a sort of 'crowd narration' for events or shows. Neuros is inaugurating this technology with the upcoming presidential debate so that anyone can participate in real time fact checking, discussion etc along with the candidates. While anyone can participate in the discussion you'll need a Neuros OSD to see that discussion on your TV set superimposed over the debate." Participate in the US Presidential Debate with Crowd Narration (Thanks, Joe!)

I predict that this will be used to turn the debate--if it happens--into LOLcandidates.

Even if it does, this is still one of the most awesome uses for technology I've seen. So simple, and yet, wow.

they're gonna have to stick a delay on the feed and a moderator to remove offensive etc. posts from the actual live feed... hmm can you imagine someone having to disemvowel items almost as fast as they're coming in?

Current TV and Twitter have teamed up to do something similar... all you need is a computer, a twitter account, and Current TV.

#3: No more so than they put a delay and a moderator on regular chat rooms, IMO.

Moderator, in the sense of someone to kick/ban jackasses, yes. Moderator, in the sense of humans to vet each chat message before it can be seen, no. That's rather counter the idea of a chat room.

Because the set top box is grabbing the chat from the net it's not subject to any of those pesky FCC regs. Plus you opt in or out of the room so I don't think there is a big concern over keeping text clean. Just boot trouble makers :)

#6: That's what I was thinking. They're not broadcasting anything - it's just "teh interwubs" as usual, only they're overlaying it with a live cable feed.

So... wait, are the debates actually happening, then? Or is this going to be the LOLization of Obama vs. Vacant Podium?

(Serious question; news.google is giving me no love here)

That guy has to become a voice actor!

He sounds like Lee Perry, the guy that brought you "Wear Sunscreen".

Can we just give them one moment to speak without commentary? I have rules for watching debates and speeches in my house. Nobody talks about it until it's all over. We give them the benefit of full attention without coloring their statements with our own opinions. After the debates are over we can discuss it on our terms.

This looks to be the antithesis of our rules. In fact you're inviting the anonymous monstrosity of the internet into your home. Maybe if you set up a chat room of people whose political opinions and candor you really respect, but honestly, how many of those people do you know? I know two.

Its like real-life NicoDou! Awesome!

For the uninitiated, NicoNicoDouga (Smile Video) is like YouTube with overlays, except that anyone (not just the uploader) can add them. Resulting in hilarious and strange examples of a video-comment zeitgeist.

NicoNico has origins in 2chan, which is also the spawning inspiration for the infamous 4chan boards. As noticed by #14, /b/ would (will?) devour this.

I think this is a great idea and I wonder why i had to wait so many years to see it put into action :)

Space 1999 anyone? I remember one episode where there was a court case of some ilk and the AI that ran the moon base analysed and commented on the proceedings making comments such as "Content free comment" or "attempt to mislead" etc.

Can anyone find a link to som eonline vid? Is it just me?

Well, darn! I archived over 80,000 tweets relating to the debates this last hour, and was going to do a keyword cloudmap in realtime as a video of the debate played in the background.

Maybe I'll still do it... I'll let BB know how it turns out. ;)

*last hour* should be last four hours.

Eh. They'll probably just ignore it.

If they want discussion, it's already common practice to just keep a fast-running thread about the topic - go to /tv/ on days big shows are airing, for example.

If they want lulz, there's not much to be had - the people on the show can't see the text. It'd just turn into a pile of all-caps memes, and they'd get bored of that in a couple days.

heh.. Years ago I worked for a company that ported Mozilla over to embedded platforms, specifically with a major emphasis on set-top boxes. One of their major partners was AOL.

AOL had managed to completely bungle the interface to the point that it was pretty much unusable. But the one cool feature they had was the same sort of thing. You could be watching TV, hit a button and it would throw you into an onscreen chatroom with others watching the same program.

Actually finding the channel you wanted to watch, however, was a different story. Their interface actually RENUMBERED YOUR CHANNELS. ugh.
