Princess Leia Nagel-esque poster (Leia + Nagel = Leigel?)

Our pal Bonnie Burton from LucasFilm says: "Our very own Starwars.com designer Craig Drake created this AWESOME '80s-inspired Princess Leia poster!" Snip from the description:
For the uninitiated (or too young to remember), artist Craig Drake's "The Princess" artwork is reminiscent of the pervasive style of illustrator Patrick Nagel, whose posters and prints became fixtures of interior design during the 1980s (older fans might remember the artist's famous cover illustration for Duran Duran's Rio album from 1982). There's also a hint of the guitar-strumming vamps of Robert Palmer's classic '80s "Addicted to Love" music video.Read more about it here, y it here (Starwars.com). Why this is so beautiful and so eighties: it's a sort of Patrick Nagel tribute. We asked Drake what inspired him to render Leia, another '80s icon, in the era's signature style. "Like a lot of Star Wars fans having grown up in the '80s, I was exposed to some amazing signature pop culture visuals," says Drake, who suggests Nagel's style probably came closest to representing the fashion and oppulence of the '80s. "Truthfully, his style really annoyed me as a kid, but as time went on I began rediscovering his work -- his brilliantly minimalist yet bold vision of beautiful, strong women is what inspired me to illustrate Princess Leia."

This is almost too good. It reminds me of Nagel's work in a positive nostalgic way--in the sense that I temporarily me forgot how annoying, faddish, and ubiquitous Nagel's images were in the 80's--along with the images of 1000 imitators on cereal boxes, etc.
I think this should be the ever-present Nagel used at hair salons.
Much more imaginative coiffure would be the likely outcome though...
This is odd timing, I just stumbled across a guy here in Minneapolis who has a great collection of 80's pop/"free with your purchase of a new furniture set" art.
Here's his link: http://ppf1.com/
He sells restored furniture and various fine art and vintage office equipment.
It's very random how I came across this site, and more so no with this BB post.
Being a child of the 80's I take great pleasure in this awesome melding of two huge 80's icons, Star Wars and Patrick Nagel.
I used to be into Nagelpunk, but it's so over now.
GarthMPLS: I can't find the images you're referring to on that site, but it does remind me of one of my great lost art purchases. Even though it was only a poster, and the black-laquer and leopard furniture store wanted $400 for it unframed, it was an all-time best parody: A version of The Last Supper, only instead of the Biblical figures the artist had substituted Frankenstein, Laurel & Hardy, Marilyn Monroe, and various other olde tyme Hollywood figures. A+
WIN! Also, WANT!
/better than bacon crowns and skull cameras.
Am I the only one disappointed that it wasn't Princess Leia in the gold bikini?
You'll notice this Leia is sans cinnabun hair styling. And that was such a sexy look--not.
Awesome! But 11"x17" = $49.99 - PSHHHHH!
Slick lines, but if he was trying to go for something 80's and Nagel-like then it's not really there, is it?
It's too organic looking, too smooth, not enough lines. There should be many more folds in the clothing, and a more confident pose. Also, more bold jarring colours, not subtle blue-grey tones.
#11- Nagel was *all* about the Payne's Grey.
Yes, I'm horrified I know that.
The thought of a Robert Palmer and a dozen Princess Leias "Addicted to Love" music video is so hard to get out of my head that I predict that just that will show up on youtube in a week.
Disagree Felix. Do some Nagel research, there are plenty of subdued palette examples- vibrant lip color is enough. And as for more lines/folds in the clothing- HUH? Are we even talking about the same artist? Look at some Nagel work. Clothing/figures are flat shapes with minimal detail. This is spot on.
Find this pleasing, I do.
Dances on the sand, Leia does.
Awesome is right! Now that's what I call a Wonderful Thing(tm).
Seconding Reaper2k's motion for Leia Slavegirl version. Although that wouldn't really fit the Nagel vibe (cold, remote, haughty). But still -- just sayin'.
Nagel vibe (cold, remote, haughty)
Retracting that, since it's not really true if you look at a range of Nagel works.
Reminds me of that They Live period when you would see imitation Nagels on every wall and magazine page. This picture of Leia, her gun and jumpsuit, has a little too much character, though.
yay! Thanks for posting, Xeni!
The things she can do with a blaster...
Totally awesome. Of note though. While Nagel himself is dead as of '84, his estate has a history of taking knee-jerk legal action. (see See Mirage Editions, Inc. v. Albuquerque ART Co., 856 F.2d 1341, 1343 (9th Cir. 1988)
Also, he did a Duran Duran album cover.
First thought:
"Her name is Leia, and she dances on the sand..."
Leia + Nagel = Leigel? Barely.
I prefer something a little more classical:

EH,
You need to go to the "fine art" linkon the site. There is a list of awesome 80's artists on there. Nagel is towards the middle. http://ppf1.com/
I remember downloading a bunch of Nagel files in GIF format from BBSs in the late 80s.
Meanwhile, my Nagelesque Jabba the Hutt paintings gather dust in the corner, forlorn and unsold....
I was just rediscovering Nagel recently. I loved him cause I loved Duran Duran but he really had a very original (but unfortunately very easy to copy badly) style.
He's awesome and most of his work was done for Playboy.
