The individual contribution limit for a presidential candidate is $2300.
If he plans to donate more than the cost of 4 1/2 prints, he'll be breaking the law.
The only way I can see this working is if people who want posters donate the $500 to Obama themselves. However, it seems likely to me that a large large number of people willing to pay $500 for a poster have already maxed out their donations to the Obama campaign.
So, I think the idea that all of the proceeds from this sale will go to Obama is not very likely to be true.
I absolutely love Ryden, and would totally buy a print if I wasn't restricted financially. Ah, there's the bee, there's Abe, there you are, Jesus! Love it!
@#1 I'm not sure if keeping McCain out of the White House couldn't be considered "humanitarian relief."
I second #2's reservations. It would be nice if the artist explained exactly how the donation happened.
$250,000 for 500 posters... something tells me I'm in the wrong line of work.
At the end of that song, don't they nail Peter Pumkinhead to a tree?
@ #6 - You are in the wrong line of work if you can actually paint like Ryden.
@2, @5, I'll see if Mark or Merry wants to provide more info.
Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all
Emptied churches and shopping malls

Now that is an interesting outdoor play structure! I would really like to see some lifesize dinosaur head model replica things for climbing. It's brilliant.
Damn, #7 and #10 beat me to it.
Am I the only one who thinks that art is scary shit that will frighten small children?
Why is my bank account always zero'd out when these things become available?
Thanks reganomix.
#13:
yes you are.
I made one you can have for FREE, with all the proceeds going to Obama as well:
Zav, no you are not the only one. It's too creepy for me, and I like creepy stuff. That's not to say others dont' just love it.
Awww, the censors at Boing Boing decided my free speech and humor wasn't in line with their ideology. *cries*
Hmm, that must mean that Ryden also supports the Patriot Act that his beloved candidate voted for and voted to extend, and he must also support war, considering that Obomba has consistently voted in favor of war, anddd Ryden must also be totally cool with his Savior voting for warrantless wiretapping of Americans. Doesn't it suck when good artists have to get all political on us?
Regardless of politics, the moment Ryden decided to publicly announce dontation to the Obama campaign, this exited a traditional understanding of "art" and became promotion/campaigning.

An example of when good artists go bad...
Where's the Obama part?
This painting has absolutely zero symbolism of Obama, or a presidential campaign whatsoever.
I think Mark had this painting lying around already, and decided to re-purpose it to cause a hype/buzz/stir in both the art world as well as the prog-blogs&political scene in general.
If I hadn't read the word "Obama" in the description, I never would've guessed it.
The painting is called "The Pumpkin PRESIDENT". Obama is the PRESIDENT elect. That's what it has to do with Obama.
#23 I agree, and cannot find the relationship between Obama and this painting
#24 If that's all that you can relate, then he might as well painted another meat slab and called it America.
(btw I'm a big fan of both Obama and Ryden)
