Guy with Chinese landscape tattoo in exhibition of Chinese contemporary art

Marilyn sez, "Swiss businessman Uli Sigg owns one of the largest collections of contemporary Chinese art in the world, and part of his collection has just gone on display at UC Berkeley Art Museum,. The exhibit is called 'Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection,' and includes these photos of a man with a Chinese landscape painting tattooed on his torso and arms." There's no way that's a tattoo. White ink does not cover that well or that consistently over fingernails.

The photo is by Huang Yan and is titled "Chinese Landscape, Tattoo No. 2" and is part of a series of photos called the Tattoo series, but the press release is in Chinese which I can't read:

This looks like a great exhibition but the previous commenter is right - this isn't a permanent tattoo; the artists paints onto people. In this photo, you can see how the white paint has cracked a bit as it dried. Some of his other pieces depict full facial 'tattoos' on schoolchildren, so I do hope they're not real!

Not a tattoo, sorry.

"Huang Yan creates his "Tattoo Landscape" on the chest of a model. The white powder base creates a mottled background on the undulating surface of the skin. The traditional landscape painted in brown and green, follows the contours of the body and seems to come alive in this context. The photograph of the painting captures the effect in detail, from the pores of the man's skin to the continuous brush strokes that create the sinuousness of the greenery."

Reminds me of a Futurama episode, where they have an art exhibition of reproductions of masterpieces tattooed onto fat guys.

Life imitates art :-]

"Nowadays, people aren't interested in art that isn't tattooed on fat guys."

Futurama is becoming reality.

Orky, ever read the Roald Dahl story, Skin?

Similar idea, much older.

Everyone else: If you haven't read Roald Dahl's adult fiction (not necessarily Skin), check it out, you are missing some great, twisty ideas, told beautifully.

...And if he does the Macarena, you can see a performance art recreation of Chairman Mao's Long March! :-P

the press release in English (which doesn't talk about this particular piece):
http://bampfa.berkeley.edu/press/release/TXT0225

that artist's name is Huang Yan, and he calls his pieces "tattoos," which probably caused the confusion

great online gallery of the exhibition here:

but some of it you have to see in person!

Dang, it's just a photo of the guy. From the title I was hoping there was an actual tattooed human being sitting in the exhibit all day.

Maybe I'll get some Sesshu inked on my back and make my dream a reality.

Wow, tattooing the fingernails must be particularly painful. :-P

Mahjong will also be traveling to the Peabody Essex Museum in February '09--as the only East Coast venue for this exhibition in the States.

Well, for real Chinese tattoos-as-art, there is always Qin Ga's "The Miniature Long March" (2002-05)
