Too many colors and too complex sprites and backgrounds for an Atari 2600 system, but nice nontheless.
I also thought that there were too many colors and sprites for an Atari2600. Maybe a Colecovision or even 5200 could do it.
Yes, the graphics are too detailed to be real 2600 games, but I suppose that's why they're presented as box art. Screenshots that appeared in print were usually rendered by artists who are trying to make the game look good. And you can't draw flickering sprites.
They're cute, but IIRC most Atari 2600 boxes featured watercolour action sequences, some of which had those "rainbow trails".
