Floor "refinished" by drawing on it
Love this floor retrofit: just cover it up with vinyl and draw on it with a fat marker!
Kitchen floor doodling (via Neatorama)
It all began when i wanted to get rid of the wooden floors that were in my apartment when i bought it. Tearing it up would be a lot of work(obviously) and stupid(because even if i don’t like it, i know replacing it with plastic floor would lower the value of this apartment remarkably when i’m going to sell it one day).So i started looking for a way to keep the original floor, but cover it with a white shiny surface. Painting it would possibly ruin the floor, and it would require a complete floor grind. No other solutions seemed to be available. Until i one day saw a roll of self-adhesive vinyl film in the hardware store. People use it for cupboards and car decals, why wouldn’t it work on a floor? The staff at the store said it would never work of course. “It won’t last blah blah blah leave marks blah blah do it proper blah”.
But i was optimistic. I don’t need something to last for 10 years, if it looks good for one year and is easy to remove it’s way better! And it’s cheap too. So i bought a roll and tried it out.

Hmmmm... I think someone should approach a laminate manufacturer with this "doodle"
I know I'd like put something like this on my floor for the long haul but don't have the artsy talent.
I woulda drawn the downstairs neighbors looking up .....
... but what he DID draw is really cool ... are those fried eggs fer the gator? He looks hongry ...
That's a floor? OHHHhhhhh....I see. I thought it was art. Well, that's interesting.
i like it... but curious as to why they prefer something so...surgical.. looking like this white lynolyum over a natural wood floor. to me wood floors are warm and inviting one might go as far as to say wood floors are cozy
i too prefer the warmth of a wooden floor. that aside, the design and potential are rather nice.
still, i'd charge that throwing away one's floor each year is a might wasteful.
@5: Maybe the "wood floor" was parquet, in which case, almost anything is a welcome change.
"I woulda drawn the downstairs neighbors looking up ....."
I wold have drawn me looking at the downstairs neighbors, if I could draw like that...
Marker on vinyl doesn't age very well.. and rubs off fairly easily too. This could end up being very messy after a little while.
I'd also suggest buying some of the fancy German contact paper, the stuff from the hardware store can sometimes become brittle, and the glue may gum up. A terrible combo when it comes to removal. Results may vary, of course, but I've had to pull up way too much of this stuff to want it all over my floor.
Come now, lets not deny reality.
This is the product of someone wanting to lay on their floor and get stoned out their gord with a pile of markers.
But yeah, its cool.
I would have just written the word ceiling over and over in a nice pattern.
Or perhaps something like M.C. Escher that makes you trip over you own feet everytime you walk into the room.
It won’t last. It'll leave marks. Do it proper!
While the creator indicates that it didn't leave a trace of glue, I have my doubts that after 'a year or two' it won't - think about it, leaving masking tape down for a day or two isn't bad either, but leaving it for a lot longer can cause big trouble, especially in an area that's going to have a fair bit of pressure applied on a regular basis.
I used Contac paper to cover up an ugly vinyl floor in my Chicago apartment. It holds up remarkably well and if you get tired of it, just zip over to the store and pick up a new design!
It looks too busy, no way you could relax in such a room. Also, I don't think it will last a year, and it will be a mess to remove after being walked on for any length of time.
I love this idea. I did the same thing to my desk and part of the refrigerator.
It's just a matter of how well your line art skillz are, and how comfortable you are looking at your shit all the time.
Please people, lets not bring any more Vinyl into the world. It all ends up somewhere.
What you need is good ol' linoleum: cloth 'pregnated with linseed oil. There's nothing linseed oil can't do!
#9: That's what Krylon Clear Coating is for, right?
