We speak of women's suffrage and other great historic events. However, a country founded over 200 years ago only afforded black Americans the right to vote when Obama was 4 years old (1965) is paramount in understanding what this campaign is faced with.
One of the great -- well, maybe just OK -- bands of the 60s was Lothar And The Hand People, whose hit "Standing on the Moon," acclaimed by hundreds. They were on a major label -- Capitol, I think, and Lothar played a theremin -- hence the name Hand People. They were slightly eerie, but then a lot of things were.
yes, good point, I often forget to curse the soul of Alexander Popov whenever I see a radio. That bastard wasn't even a spy for the russians, he was one!
@6: Actually, someone on the LJ steamfashion group really did make a steampunks-for-Obama pin. Except rather than a normal button, it was a gear and some metal strips made to look like the O-with-waves logo thingy. It was awesome looking, and was immediately met with several "I want one" comments.
Yes, I would be one of the people making such a comment.
But serious questions remain about Obama and his relatively thin theremin-playing resume.
Sure, he claims with his presidency there will finally be a thereminvox in the Oval Office. But is he a true thereminist, or does he just look like one, waving his hands around like so many before him? Is he even TRYING to do an aerial finger position in that photo? does he have the resolve to stand perfectly still while playing, not swaying under pressure or moving to the left or to the right?
What did he play on theremin and when did he play it?
Does his thereminism point to an alignment with theremin history? Lenin was a thereminist.
Unfortunately, though I would LOVE to vote for Obama simply because he is a thereminst, as it would vindicate me of the guilt I feel for the terrible mistreatment of thereminists in the history of this great country, I fear that when he arrives on the world stage to play a theremin concert he might wind up sounding off-key and whiney. Maybe he needs to practice more.
For the uninitiated
Its good to hear the campaign has managed to sway this important and oft overlooked section of the voting population.
Little known fact: Kerry only lost in 04 because he wasn't able to win the thereminist vote.
Awesome, just awesome. Theremins + election jokes = full of win.
I used to play theremin in a band, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.
But wait, there's more! Unicorns for Obama!
And don't forget the crucial Steampunk vote.
Awesome. Good thing I wasn't drinking when I saw that post or else I'd have spit all over my keyboard.

Gnarls Barkley's song, Crazy, performed in part on a theramin:

Too bad Léon Theremin (the inventor) was a Soviet spy and did a lot of work for the KGB, a fact that wasn't discovered (or revealed) until relatively recently.
We shouldn't regard him that highly.
Odd that they had to kidnap and imprison him for so long if he was working for them.

#4 t3knomanser- I am also a farker, so I'm getting a kick out of your reply.

This one looks too much like handcuffs.
Thereminist(s) has got to be the awkwardest word I've seen all day.
Obama, this one's for you:

Somehow, I figured that the unicorn chaser, Unicorns for Obama, was more BoingBoing's style...

There's a "Battle of the Presidential Candidates eBooks at Fictionwise":

Obama's "The Audacity of Hope" is currently in the lead. (Both books carry a 100% rebate, so in effect it's more or less a poll if you are a client.)
Sigh. He's not playing it right. The loop should be by his LEFT hand, and he's playing a VERY HIGH NOTE currently, and at top volume.
If you want our opponents to call us shrill, play the theremin that way.
All I can say is: Wowww.
Xopher,
Maybe it's a left-handed theremin?
I saw a very interesting documentary recently about Bob Moog, the inventor of the synthesizer and saw that he got his start building theremins.
I understand Moog still makes theremins.
Yep, his company made mine. And even if it's a left-handed theremin (and they do exist), his left hand is way too close to the pitch antenna.
But I'm nitpicking for comic effect. I love this button and will probably get one.
Hilarious.
