Boombox from THE AWESOME FUTURE

This JVC optical-disc (DVD, CD -- DiVx, MP3, etc) boom-box looks like it'd be a handy enterainment center. Plus, HOLY CRAPPING PASGHETTI MONSTER IT LOOKS LIKE IT CAME FROM THE AWESOME FUTURE! I wish everything in my house -- TV, lamps, toaster, coffee-machine, bathtub, toothbrush -- looked like this. JVC - Mini System 540 watts - HXD77J (via Red Ferret)

Good Lord. This is the James Cameron version, right?
Come to think of it, it looks more like something from "Transformers"....
This looks like it might have that new "Human Eradication Mode".
That would be one craptastic house.
Please put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply.
As a fan of the AWESOME FUTURE (tm), does it always have to look like Megatron took a dump?
to me its not truley a boombox unless its all one piece, has a handle (or sholder strap if necessary) and can run off batterys no matter how short the life span... ah the days of yesteryear
See, it's crap like this that led me to the Tivoli Model 2 stereo (http://www.tivoliaudio.com/product.php?productid=144&cat=262&page=1)
Exactly three knobs.
It looks like it has a set of missile launchers strapped on each side... Perhaps new anti-theft system? :-)
Temporarily Sold out at Buy.com - thank gawd.
Oh, my. Not in a good way.
it's a mini hifi system and it's sold out because it's discontinued I believe...
@#4 IWOOD: You win this forum.
The more you look at those tube things on the side, the more it looks sorta... damn... Goatse.
Ugh.
Woah.... You have proven everyone has their own taste...
Sorry to double poop on the parade.... but that is for sure... the ugliest boom box I have ever seen in my life.
I hope it functions well... cause they really screwed up on the form part of the design IMHO...
This is of course all thrown out the window if it actually turns into a transformer and makes me some lunch... I am starving
This is the same crappy design aesthetic that has been around for over 10 years now, just more steroids added. It's an aesthetic that is almost literally interchangeable with sneakers and a zillion other carbuncled commodities. Give me honest steampunk or the Tivoli approach.
If Lloyd Dobbler had hoised that over his head to woo Diane Cort, I'm sure he would have been tasered.
Luckily it weighs 120 pounds, and would never be lifted without power assistance.
#7, and they sound good too!
agh, gawds... stuff like that reminds me of those cars you see with the 3 foot high spoiler, fart-cannon muffler and street glow. They look high-performance, but they aren't. (Really tuned cars might have some glam, but most of the owner's money went to the parts inside the car.)
On that subject, do you know how hard it is to get a decent car stereo with WITHOUT a display that:
a) Looks like a Pink Floyd show at night and
b) Is unreadable during the day!
JVC makes plenty of those too!
but if you want a coffee maker like that:
http://members.whattheythink.com/dilbert/dilbert080401.cfm
Except that it's made by JVC, so it's little "number one plastic" mech legs will probably snap at the ankles the very first time it tries to become self-aware.
Forget it, I'm waiting for the Voltron home entertainment unit, that forms a combination of a toaster, iPhone, printer, automatic cat feeder, and vibrator. Don't even worry where the missiles unfolded from. It has a lot of compartments.
in Heaven, Radio Raheem smiles
ernunnos - Speakers make noise, but the boxes they are in should not. Resonance is what makes a speaker sound boomy or harsh.
Decent speakers (and those nice little radios) use cabinets made from dense wood or composites (not cheap plastic or particleboard) along with proper damping materials inside the cabinet.
Heavier speakers are usually better speakers. If you can tap on the speaker cabinet and it sounds hollow, NEXT!
I'm sitting here, trying to figure out if the "missile launchers" on the side actually perform some kind of function, or if they're purely decorative.
I'm not sure which option I'd prefer, to be honest. They're both mildly worrying.
gly rcr grbg.
that's unkind
JVC's low-end build quality is about the same as anything else: If you paid a low three figures (or less) all bets are off.
Can't complain about my JVC TV. Great quality, and about the only thing in it that can/will fail is the lamp. 3000+ hours on a $200 lamp is better than most.
jerril - they are the usual bandpass subwoofer ports. They might go boom, but I wouldn't really call it bass.
Stick legs on it, and you'd swear it was something out of some mecha-themed comic...
When did Michael Bay start making stereos?
I've seen these... they forgot the tail-fins.
The Future? Looks like half the cheap crappy all in one stereos made over the past 10 years. The other half decided to go with the equally crappy small sleek and wood look.
Bring back big nobs on shiny silver steel. None of these fiddly displays where you have 300 EQ pre-sets that all sound shit and require pressing the same button over and over again to access said pre-sets.
i for one welcome our future/boom box overlords!
This strikes me as fodder for some sort of photoshop contest...
Screw the "minimalists" this thing is awesome.
I don't get what's so special about this?
Boombox's have looked exactly like that since the 90's. This is just a regular plain jane nothing special boombox.
Thanks for sharing your tedium with us.
Anytime antinous.
I just wonder, has no one here stepped foot in a Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart?
Seriously.
Nope, just Amazon, eBay, and the Apple Store. and NewEgg.
Oh, and I'll pick up my disposable flatpack furniture at Ikea.
LL Cool J just called and said he *can* live without this radio.
For the most throb-inducing selection of fabulous future technology, proceed to your nearest urban blight zone, and peer through the glowing gated windows of the Rent-A-Center.
It's the anti-steampunk!
But this one goes to eleven, see?
Quad 50-cali, quad 30-cali.
Unfortunately, sonic emitters play only Van Halen, var. S. Hagar.

It looks like it has a set of missile launchers strapped on each side... Perhaps new anti-theft system? :-)
The missiles are for mega bass ultrafication. Audio snobs say the bass is too boomy, but have you looked at their sissy-looking systems lately?
grenade launchers?
