Steps made out of skateboards

Ted made this skateboard staircase for his skateboard deck-building school: "The aluminium beam is a solid billet of aluminium and the decks were custom made with concave only on one edge. You should see the look on our students faces when they make the treck to the basement." Coolest Steps in the World (via Make)

Now that's "deck"orative!

I'm still pondering the frightening phrase "skateboard school." Let's add that to the oxymoron list.

The problem with steps is that the decks are slightly concave on the topside, so your foot would be spanning two edges instead of coming down flat on the surface. Maybe grip tape would add stability?

It's explained in the first sentance - "the decks were custom made with concave only on one edge".

At circa 50 quid per stair an expensive staircase indeedy.

Design critique:

*Kind of ruined by the change to a 'standard' set of steps after making the turn on the landing.

*Using the large wooden blocks for bracing tends to hide the clever design of the treads-'twould have been better to use a simple aluminum brace (matching the center spine) to help 'show' the skateboard decks.

Posted earlier on materialicious, and comments include some explanation by the guy who made them, Ted. Interesting read:
