Photos from SF Zine Fair

Wired's got a nice gallery of photos taken at the San Francisco Zine Festival:

The two-day conference featured a wide variety of DIY arts and crafts, zines, comics and a gypsy-like atmosphere. Attending noobs were also treated to hands-on workshops, from bookbinding to illustration and Q & A sessions with accomplished self-publishers.

For zinesters, zines are like the blogs of the print world. They're an essential part of offline geek and underground culture and their DIY aesthetic has influenced an entire generation of designers and writers.

wow! that guy in the photo is an old co-worker from when he lived Minneapolis. His name is Doctor Popular and he is the 2nd greatest yo-yo trick guy or something like that in the country.

I hadn't thought about him for years and then BAM-there he is!

SF Zinefest was a blast this year, and that Wired article is just icing on the cake.
BTW, I'm the handsome guy on the right (with a big pile of yo-yos and zines). I just wrote a short recap of the weekend on my blog (here http://www.docpop.org/2008/07/21/post-sf-zinefest.html and more here http://www.docpop.org/2008/07/22/wired-boingboing-and-poop.html). I think Emily did a terrific job with the article, the pictures really captured the feel and it's cool that she noticed the link between zine culture and blogging.
BTW Cory, I hear that you've bought some jeans from Self Edge Denim (where I tailor). If you had your jeans altered, there is a good chance your scraps may have turned into one of the wallets on the table in the picture. You can see more of those recycled selvage wallets on http://www.docpopcrafts.com

MPLSDUB, doctorpopular.com is undergoing maintenance, but you can find my blog and everything else on www.DocPop.org. Stop by there sometime and say "hi".

I have indeed bought some jeans there! Two pairs. THe first was fantastic. The second time, though, I wanted to buy something kind of baggy fitting and the guy there talked me into spending a fortune on really tight ones that just got tighter after washing (not looser, as promised) and are now unwearable. It really turned me off the store, since I was wearing a pair of jeans I'd bought in Tokyo at the time and REALLY wanted another pair that fit like them, and the pair he talked me into were totally different.

That was a nice little show. I filled several holes in my Murder Can Be Fun collection, buying the "kids who kill" and "zoo deaths" issues. My favorite is still the "Death At Disneyland"issue. MCBF still, to me, epitomizes everything a zine should be.

This was a great show -- I have to admit that I spent more than I should have, people were just so darn talented. Loved the Murder Can Be Fun zines, those are a great read. Also enjoyed seeing Vanessa Davis (and other talented folks) drawing in person...

I took a ton of pictures, of people, zines, and art...

I went! My first time, actually, and it was everything I wanted it to be. The great dream is to do a zine and host half a table at some point in the future.
