Laptop lounge chair

Robin Carpenter's (concept?) design for a laptop chair really strikes a chord with me. My house and office always seem to be a minefield of laptops balanced on chair-arms or stood on edge on the floor. I'd love to be able to pop the little guy down beside me and pick up the paper for a bit without risking sending him crashing to the ground. Link (via Cribcandy)

If it can hold a laptop with a 17" display, then I am sold!

Kinda takes the lap out of laptop, doesn't it?

On my local BBC news show (Look East) they have chairs which look similar to this, more like an office chair but with the same concept of having a laptop attatched and I always think it looks quite funny when they swivel round to talk to the weathergirl and the laptop follows them

I'm sure it is a great chair for 5 minutes, maybe 10. But I'm just as sure that it is terrible for your back after 5 hours or 10, and absolutely painful after 5 days of that ...

If you want a chair, make sure your sitting position is at least somewhat symmetrical, and not twisted to the right to use your laptop.

If you want anything like that, have a look at Star Trek TnG - the navigators (the two guys in front of Picard) have the perfect solution, if you replace their consoles a board that you can put a laptop on. When you want to use it, you swing it over your lap, when not, you swing it back. No permanent twisting involved, and thus no pain. May not be quite as elegant though.

I'm surprised we haven't seen a commercial version of a poseable articulated arm, like the x-ray at the dentist's office, with a laptop platform on the end. Then all your existing furniture (including bed) is laptop friendly.

You could also use a TV tray table, or an Ikea "DAVE" laptop table. There are also many wall and table-moutable laptop arms.

That would be it - thanks, Stratosfyr!

Of course, $2000 for a laptop arm is cuh-razy!.

May I interest you in an end table? :)

Really though, it's a great idea for people who like to swivel. Only problem is that shelf will also need to be able to hold your 85-lb nephew as well, since he climbs everywhere. Also the central spindle will need to be very strong to bear the load that the longer lever might put on it. It's pretty though.

Who needs a laptop chair when you can lug an old CRT monitor onto your lap, like one of the agents at Improv Everywhere did at Starbucks?

What I really want is a chair mounted "on a poseable articulated arm",

...We're going to start seeing more "normal" furniture adapted for notebook support in the next few years, kids. And I for one welcome them, because let's face it - the current range of Laz-E-Boys just don't quite cut it :-(

The one place you can't set a Mac PowerBook is on your lap; they run too goddamn HOT. You have to have a non-conductable flat surface between it and your dick or you'll burn it. Fucking thing is small room heater!

I have two (pretty much) like this:

and a couch to go with them. The fat arms are perfect for IMing-the-wife-on-the-other-side-of-the-living-room laptopage; plenty of stability and you're not typing at your knees. comfy too.

So Cory, your laptop is a 'he' does 'he' have a name? I am always curious as to the anthropomorphizing we do of our gadgets... I have had three female desktop computers, and two male laptops. I dunno why I've understood the desktops were female (at least the ones I had in my possiession) and the laptops male (again the ones in my possession), but they have always seemed to be like that for me.

This post inspired me to take a few pictures of my own setup. If you've got a little table or surface, adding a little slip-mat will make it a secure place for your laptop to live:

Once you get your CPU grafted beneath your skull you stop worrying about the hot lap syndrome.
But I had to add a 30mm fan to my left ear this weekend.

we need a kotatsu that pumps heat from the top (laptop) and dumps it below(leg heater)

How awesome would it be if it some how had bookshelves incorporated in it? You might explode in a joygasm Cory.

@#20 - most people could use that fan add-on even without the CPU graft.

Looks like i'd be MORE afraid of that thing going flying that I would resting it on my sofa armrest.

And #3 - Laptops, as such, do not exist. I believe you'll find them marketed as Notebooks or portables.

Advertising these things as Laptops is like McDonalds' saying their coffee is best served poured directly onto your crotch.
