Gama-Go: giant wooden Deathbot and membership program

Giant Deathbot2-1 Our pals at Gama-Go are making 50 of these giant wooden Deathbot statues. They're 30 inches tall and sell for $350 including shipping. I am anxiously awaiting arrival of my new Deathbot overlord! And for those seeking an even more intense Deathbot experience, an armor-plated version is also available as part of Gama-Go's new Store Fund Club. To raise money to open a store, GAMA-GO is offering four tiers of membership support where you pay $80 to $5000 in exchange for a 10% to 40% discount and a limited edition creation, from a signed print to metal designer toys. (The giant armored Deatbot is part of the top-tier offering, 'natch.) Membership program sign-up ends July 31.

Um...words fail me. I guess what I mean to say is are there any *wonderful* things going on in the world at large today or was this it?

Why do they want to open a store?

I've never heard of getting the public at large to help put up the funds to open a store. Sounds like a great idea. I'm curious to see how successful it actually is.

On a t-shirt store related note, Johnny Cupcakes is opening a store in L.A. and has been putting photos of his process on his blog: http://www.johnnycupcakes.com/blog/ I'm not a fan of his shirts and frankly I don't get why they are so popular, but I admire his gumption and its cool to see the process of opening a store.

Useta be a big TB fan but it feels like the commerce has overwhelmed the art. I was an avid gama go collector too until I bought one of those flipclock thingies. Damned thing fell apart in like two weeks and the cheapness of it really soured my view of their enterprise. Seems like they'll release any ol' piece of Chinese slave made crap at over-inflated artist prices. So yeah, good luck with the store!

@Jimpyloo (#4), Did you contact them when your clock broke?

David (#5) I bought that clock from a third party
who didn't respond to my return queries.
But my point is there doesn't seem to be much concern for what Tim Biskup will put his mark on these days. I'm surrounded by prints and vinyl toys that I've picked up over the years and unfortunately most of them now remind me of that disregard for quality control, that kind of shabbiness. So there's a blowback effect--those other pieces I once loved are now kinda tarnished.

I thought customers were supposed to fund the opening of new stores by, you know, purchasing stuff from them after they open. The notion of people spending money to help build a place where they can go spend more money strikes me as farcical. But hey, someone at Gama-Go is a very savvy businessperson, getting all these plugs on BB (though this may be a paid ad) and getting loyal customers to act as unrepaid lenders too!

It seems like they sell cool stuff, I give you that, and they clearly do a good job building their trend-setter cred, but I wonder if the business side has taken over from the creative side. Asking people to buy discounts just makes me cynical.

@HARSHLANGUAGE (#7), BB has never received a penny from GAMA-GO. I love their stuff and that's why you'll see it frequently featured here.

@ #8 Thanks, I'm glad to hear it.
