Joi Ito points to this fan-remix of a photo he once took of George Lucas and JJ Abrams -- he's looking to contact whoever created it.

I'd like to contact the artist to ask for permission to use it and ask them to license it under a CC license. I'd also like to provide attribution. If you sent me the photo and are reading this, can you leave a comment or send me an email? If you know who did this, let me know too.

Wasser: I would hazard a guess that No, permission would not be needed as the image is an obvious parody

Yeah, I had to reread that to be sure too, I suspect because I was so surprised by the implication. That being that Joi Ito took the original photo of Lucas and Abrams. Someone else photoshopped in the phaser and light saber. But rather than wanting to sue the photoshopper into a grease spot and have him forever banned from using anything with a microprocessor in it, Ito considers the resulting photo a valid derivative work and the property of the photoshopper, such that he'd have to have permission to use it himself.

Pretty amazing, huh?
