Flickr user Aud1073cH has a fine collection of handmade guitar picks. Personally, I'm a fan of bread picks, those little plastic things that keep loaf bags closed. Link(via MAKE: Blog)
For years and years (starting in '89 maybe?) I have cut guitar picks from old credit cards. They are not as good as store-bought picks, but they are OK for beater guitars or if you lose picks all the time (which I used to be prone to).
I used to do this with my school IDs all the time in high school. Our mascot was basically Satan, which for some reason we called "The Blazer" (not much better), so I had a bunch of picks with a cartoony devil on them. Pretty sweet.
When I was a kid, we couldn't keep a pick to save our lives...my dad used to cut them from plastic milk jugs. Kind of a snappy pick, but better than the big storebought "Doritos" picks.
Some states hand out special scratching tools with their scratcher lotto tickets, comes with a textured non-slip grip and a slight cure to the scratching end. I grab one every chance I can, and love how the curved end catches on down strums and helps up strums flow.
Picks Picks Picks...
Always looking for the elusive pick that feels right.
In the end... I use a different pick for specific sound and technique in the studio... live it doesn't matter as much so I go for feel.
Love the Tortex.
