Violent Femmes perform Gnarls Barkley's CRAZY

Remember how awesome and cool it was to hear Gnarls Barkley's cover of the Violent Femmes' classic anthem "Gone Daddy Gone?" Two great summer debut albums, separated by decades, featuring the same song, done two different ways.

This summer, the Violent Femmes have released their own smoky, slow cover of Gnarls Barkley's high energy falsetto anthem "Crazy" and it's exactly as great, in reverse. Link (via Salon)

Well, this is pretty much the greatest thing ever.

"Gone Daddy Gone" is a simple song, so Gnarls Barkley covered it simply, and it sounded terrible. The best thing about "Crazy" is how Cee-Lo sings it, and because Gordon Gano can't sing – and never pretended he could – it sounds terrible. WHAT A MESS.

That's about 200 times better than the original. Gano's edge is that he could actually be crazy. I don't believe Cee-lo when he warbles about it.

The difference between these two bands was brought home at Lollapalooza '06. The Violent Femmes played on Friday, and included Gone Daddy Gone in their set. On Saturday it was Gnarls Barkley's turn. My friends and I couldn't help but laugh. The Violent Femmes show had the excitement and energy that a good live band can bring. Gnarls Barkley? Let's just say they're more of a "studio band"...

I love the Violent Femmes, but their version really didn't do it for me; for a really great cover of the song, check out Ray LaMontagne's version:

I remember the first Violent Femmes album as one of the first edgy things my sister brought home from her first year of college. I sometimes enjoy their music, but not always. This was interesting, and good too. Too bad they don't allow me to add it to my myspace page. That's one way to make sure nobody hears it.

What exactly is different about the way Gnarls Barkley does "Gone Daddy Gone"? It's always sounded completely by-the-book and straightforward to me.

I love this. I hope it means a new album to follow.

The potential for getting rickrolled in this thread is so high that I'm not following any links.

I like it, but what are the chances of seeing Gordon Gano in a Darth Vader costume?

I love it, in a WTF sort of way.

...RAC, you really know how to make a man wet.
