Canadian musicians hate the Canadian DMCA

The Canadian Music Creators' Coalition have issued a press-release about Canada's new proposed copyright law, the Canadian DMCA. Short summary: they're against it:
“The question is, who gains from this bill?” explained Brendan Canning, co-founder of Broken Social Scene and a CMCC member. “It’s not musicians. Musicians don’t need lawsuits, we don’t need DRM protection. These aren’t the things that help us or our careers. What we do need is a government that is willing to sit down with all the stakeholders and craft a balanced copyright policy for Canada that will not repeat the mistakes made in the United States.”
So: Canadian musicians hate this. Canadian ISPs hate this. Canadian librarians, educators, and scholars hate it. Who likes it? Well, the Tories like it, and the US Trade Representative likes it, and the Motion Picture Association likes it. How is this a Canadian copyright law at all? Link (Thanks, The Unusual Suspect!)

When push comes to shove, over and over again, this "Canadian Government" shows itself to be an USian agent of influence.
They are operating to preserve and expand a foreign nation's interests at the expense of those of their own people...they also want cultural free trade, IIRC....

Yes, there are. And how many times do we have to apologize for Celine Dion and Bryan Adams?

Bad legislation like this is why minority governments should be mandated by Constitutional law in this country. If this was a majority government, the bill would go to the floor for 'debate', and the Tories would invoke closure, and we'd be that much closer to officially being State 51.

can i point out that this quote has been used by nearly every story I've seen on this in the past week? It's not news, really.

But I'm finding it interesting that the Tories seem bent not getting re- elected, with this bill, Bill C-10 (hey, the Heritage Minister who helped Prentice with this one again!), and bill C- 51, all of which are proving rather unpopular.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to piss off as wide an array of voters as possible all a short time before new elections must happen.

'From', not 'in'. 'From'. Well, as soon as they can escape.
