Is it just my browser? Is it a result of traffic? This video isn't working for me. This is not uncommon - it happens on every single popular blog I visit. If the author used youtube, the video doesn't work, ultimately. The little spinny thing spins and then up come the words: "We're sorrry, this video is no longer available."

@4 CFRAMP

The same thing happens to me in Firefox on my work computer. I can only view about 1 out of 20 YouTube vids. I assumed it was because we are behind a firewall, but then I tried them in Safari and Internet Explorer and they worked fine. I dunno whats up now. Anyone know? Is it because of YouTube's recent switch to higher quality, differently formatted video files? YouTube used to work fine in Firefox.

Ow! That made my stomach churn.

Darwin is certainly chuckling, but in all fairless you usually expect the boards in a fence to be actually attached to the fence posts, not just resting on top of each other.

Probably the one who is really chuckling is the anti-yobs-doing-dumb-shit-for-laughs imp...

I'm not sure I would call this guy a "gentleman" ("yob" does seem much closer to the mark). But it's to his credit that his first response was to call for help rather than curse up a blue streak, which is what I would have done.

och! relax everyone,it takes a good deal more than that to sever a foot. All he got was a hundred kilos of concrete dropping on his ankle spread over a five centimeter width. With no distance for acceleration he likely didn't even get a broken bone, just a damn good pinch. For all we know,we was the owner of the wall. A month of hopping around and hopefully he's wiser.

Looks like a sound wall for traffic noise (like the ones that are behind my house). They just slide the panels in, and they are held with nothing but their own weight. Occasionally I will where a car crashed through a wall and all of the panels have slid out. I can't even imagine how much weight came down on his leg if all the panels above that one remained intact.

Yikes, that looks painful, but coming from someone who's done his fair share of sledghammering (concrete slabs, walls, gazebos, etc.), yow - they most likely had to demo the remaining panels to free him up, and he's hopping on one leg the whole time.

The right tools make the job easy.
The wrong ones, er... Make it painful.

It looks like a fence not a wall. If its concrete then why does it make that sound? Its probably wood. He didn't lose his leg

Take a look at this

Definitely thin wood panels. He'd be saying a lot more than "help me" if those were concrete blocks.

It's interesting that the panels were floating in vertical rails rather than fastened to the fence posts. This must allow for the panels to expand/contract without warping the fence.

Take a look at this

If they are like all the similar structures I've seen in the UK and Ireland, they are concrete. Thin maybe, but concrete.

@41: they make fences/walls like this out of concrete in some parts of the world. concrete vertical posts and thin concrete slabs slid into slots in said posts. around here they are built mostly right next to highways when there's a subdivision on the other side. cuts down on traffic noise, and will eat a lot of the force of a car that goes off the road.

They're not "Blocks" of concrete, they're sheets, about an inch and a half thick. They don't use stone aggregate, like is used in a sidewalk - I'm not sure if it's foamed concrete, or if they use styrofoam beads instead of aggregate, or what... but they're designed to block sound and slow down an out-of-control car before it smashes into a back yard or a house. Not to hold up 20 floors.

The boards are lighter than the kinds of concrete you're used to seeing in construction - they're not really load bearing... but they're still heavier than, say, pure styrofoam would be. Dunno if they're somewhere around hardwood in density or what, but that would be my random-observer guess.

One might normally categorize this under: Hans Moleman's "Man Getting Hit by Football." rather than Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things. However, it does have useful insights for the Do-It-Yourself'er, a subject frequently explored in this venue.

It is of great public benefit for us to encourage the DIY enthusiast to consider the concept of "Potential Energy". Objects that appear to be in a benign, neutral state may in-fact have considerable capacity to wreak havoc upon the unwary.

What immediately comes to mind are admonishments by my dear father to avoid injudicious investigations prompted by youthful enthusiasm involving television picture tubes, garage door springs, and large dogs who stand motionless, staring at you.

Let us hope that all persons, young and old, will find within this tragic video, lessons for their personal edification.

Take a look at this

I've helped take down a garage made of those panels before - each one probably weighed about 25-30kg, and there's probably 3 of them above the one he kicks out. I also know that once they have dropped down, if they drop even slightly skewed, they get almost totally stuck.

I'm glad I'm not him anyway, I could easily see that leading to losing a foot.

Freeze-frame it at 12s. The gap between the upper and lower blocks is about, ooh, three-quarters of an inch, I'd say. About the width of a human tibia... minus a bit.

I think most satisfying feature is the way the wall resets itself after munching the victims foot - the blocks slide down one rung and it's good to go again.

Ready for the next foot :)

Take a look at this

1) It is clearly concrete. If you haven't seen walls like this, perhaps you could think about opening your eyes and looking around. They're all over (US and Japan anyway).

2) In his defense, I wouldn't have assumed they were just slotted in there without anything holding them. I would have assumed, as he probably did, that you kick one out and there's a hole in the wall. Not really THAT stupid (aside from the vandalism angle).

3) Why is there always some idiot who says that everything is photoshopped or faked? I worry for that person, because he must have a very rosy view of the world and the horrible things that can and do happen in it. Granted, I grew up looking at photos of mangled cars full of gore (insurance). Terrible shit happens all the time; there's no reason to make it up or fake it.

4) Whether he just lost that foot depends on how many slats are above it. Even though it clearly didn't sever right then, if they don't get the weight off of it fast, the foot could die due to lack of circulation. Even if that doesn't happen, if he smashed the bone, he could be walking with a limp for the rest of his life. If he's lucky, there weren't many more slats. If he's not, it could be a very serious injury.

5) Have you ever seen someone with a very serious injury? There's this great thing called "shock," wherein your body graciously shuts the pain down for awhile and heightens your awareness so you can do things like say "Help me. Help me." It sounded to me like he was really, really hurt, because of the clarity and simplicity and repetition of that message. People can be astonishingly clear when they are really really hurt. I don't recommend learning about this via a motorcycle accident, so I hope that you'll just take my word.
