Photos from White Mischief steampunk night

Last night, I had the enormous pleasure of attending White Mischief, the semi-regular steampunk variety night at the Scala in London's King's Cross. White Mischief featured tons of bands, hilarious Victorian comedy, obscene and delightful sword-swallowing, and hundreds and hundreds of revellers in steampunk costume (some of whom were BB readers and were kind enough to introduce themselves!). I snapped a bunch of pix (pictured here, goggles from Got Steam), as did many others. Have a look at the Flickr whitemischief tag for more. Link

L.A. needs a Steampunk Faire. Badly.

What a night! It was quite something standing in line, watching hordes of people in period gear (and a few heavily steampunked) streaming into a club.

I loved meeting the people who had made their own rayguns, etc, especially Jason Wilbourn and his wife.

I hope the night continues, although I get the distinct impression that it was heavily propped up by overflow from the burlesque club scene (yes, apparently London has a burlesque club scene), so as that fades popularity for this may fade too. Nevertheless, they packed the venue, and a hell of a lot of people got really into it.

Hooray!

rayguns? but didn't the guards, cavity searches and metal detectors stop them?

you know... there is something faintly subversive about this Steampunk thing... perhaps we should form an advisory committee to properly investigate the effects of this new youth culture on the nation's children. The whole idea of costumed gatherings, risque behaviour, rayguns and who knows what other weapons they carry. I strongly suspect there was not one mention of God and Duty to Nation at the entire affair. Further, do we have any assurance this event was properly monitored with CCTV?

God, have you seen the WETA rayguns!?! Technoporn of the highest order.
...oops, forgot earlier;

#6: Well, the guy with this raygun said there was a woman with her kid glaring at him on the tube on the way to the club.

(Despite the fact that the thing was glowing and had a copper chimney out the side...)

#7: Lol. I can't find the link now, but I'm sure there was a U.S. police "instructional" video along those lines about the goth subculture not too long ago...

London has a huge burlesque scene, and I agree they made up the bulk of WM's audience. As awesome as steampunk is, it couldn't fill the Scala.

Better late(-ish) than never, the Netherlands are doing up a Steampunk bash this September 18-21. Unfortunately, it's down in Twente, about a couple of hours by train from Amsterdam, so some planning is required.
