Is there any news to report on an audio book? I heard the segment on Mur Lafferty's podcast, and would be thrilled to have a full version.
C.D., you might be interested to know that I'll be using your book in a summer reading program for youth that I'll be teaching. I made that choice after finishing it this last weekend. Great job, my man. I'm sure this group of rebels will love it too.
Are they going to rename Cody's books with Cory's books for the occasion? :)
@Zaren #1, you could read it yourself and release it as a podcast. If I understand this page[1] correctly, it's licensed under a Creative Commons Attrib-NC-SA 3.0 license. :)

#1 - you can download an audio book from a widget on Cory's Craphound.com: http://craphound.com/?p=2042
I'm "reading" it right now and the voice talent, Kirby Heyborne is excellent! I do wish it was encoded at a slightly higher bit rate though.
Best of luck!
My copy of Little Brother just arrived this morning.
I love a new book to read.
Read and record it myself... an interesting idea, since my goal in getting the audio format is not just for myself, but also to give a copy to my son. Of course, this would mean reading through the book once to get the "holy crap"s out of the way before recording, and then read it all again. I've never tried recording an audiobook before; I have enough trouble talking for my podcast, and finding time to record and edit for that. Doing a whole book... that's an imposing task.
Would our esteemed author object to such an act, were I to toss it out to the public via CC, seeing as how there's already a commercial option available? If not, it might be an interesting summer project.
Whee! Very much looking forward to the Cody's signing.
The more I look for interesting quotes from this book the more I confess I'd like to read it...
The two agents exchanged looks.
"I think you should really reconsider your approach to this situation,' severe haircut lady said. "I think you should do that right now. We found a number of suspicious devices on your person. We found you and your confederates near the site of the worst terrorist attack this country has ever seen. Put those two facts together and things don't look very good for you, Marcus. You can cooperate, or you can be very, very sorry. Now what is this for?"
"Y thnk 'm a trrrst? 'm svntn yrs ld!"
Damn you, Cory.
I shouldn't tell you this, but your incessant self promotion wore me down. I bought your damn book last weekend, and am making my way through it. Worse still: I will probably blog about it when I'm done.
Bastard.
Holtt, did you self-disemvowell Marcus' two speeches there? I don't understand the point you're trying to make if so.
(No CATFOTFIC in this thread so far. *crosses fingers*)
Yes, I was wondering about the disemvowelled quotes as well.
Wrong, Xoph. Look closer.
yup reading it just now.
yup, going to sleep with the whole "I would've said" and "I would've done" spiral going through my head...
yup, going to sleep way too late to get up for work at 6am everyday, but just can't stop reading it till the words become a jumble...
bastard, but we luvz ya!
Yes, Ant, I see what you mean. I didn't notice it was sarcasm right away until I looked at the commenter's other posts.
TedJohnson's comment, OTOH, is kudos in the FORM of CATFOTFIC, which I thought was cute.
I have a theory it must be bunnies about the disemvowelled quotes, but Holtt's other comments don't support my theory of hir intentions. So I'm hoping s/he'll explain.
I second #10. I could no longer hold out, and have begun the book. Awesome, as one would expect.
I don't expect any signings in Binghamton, NY, any time soon...unless we start building a real bookstore here right away.
Dammit. The <strike> tag doesn't work here. What I get for not previewing. Neither does its uncle the <strike> tag. Meh.
And you have to post WITHOUT previewing to get the result above, because if you preview your source text gets converted to the actual characters, and then the tags get dropped when you post!
This only supports bold, italic, blockquote and links. Believe me, I have tried everything. To avoid the conversion problem, just preview, then go back and hit post. Your original code will be there when you go back.
That works. Thanks! And of course I meant "its uncle the <s> tag."
I just find the level of moderation (or fear of moderation) here to be ironic in threads meant to push a book about civil liberties and civil disobedience. The idea of quoting (and thus promoting) yet also disemvowling text from the book just seems an appropriate way to poke at this a bit.
The same with lifting the direct text "young adult novel Little Brother" (including the link) from craphound.com. The thought that if I get censored, the censorer may have to censor his own creation in the process is an interesting one.
And of course the parody Little Blogger book cover encourages people to laugh a bit.
My friend lives nearby, and I was going to point her to Cody's, but then I had second thoughts. Is 8 going on 9 too young for this book?
LOl @ Little Blogger :D
Cefeida, probably. Its one sex scene is not graphic (in fact it's lead in...aftermath), but there are some pretty graphic scenes of violence, and other scariness.
They reviewed it on the Sci Fi Channel website:
http://www.scifi.com/sfw/books/sfw18919.html
Gave it an A-
Ah, too bad. Well, I would have probably let my (nonexistent) eight year old read it anyway, but then again, most of my childhood drawings were done on the back of short story contest submissions. I read a lot of interesting things before I even hit the double digits.
Um...what's CATFOCFIC?
Bubbele, I can only assume that a term that starts with CAT and ends with FIC has something to do with feline fiction.
Google or boingboing site search might give you a more accurate answer, though.
CATFOTFIC;
Complain(ing/er/ts) about the flavor of the free ice cream.
It's part of our drinking game. Shots when a CATFOTFIC enters the LB promotion posts. Bottoms up, boys!
Cefeida:
Read it with the kid or have another mature individual read it with them. That way, you can glaze over the partial 'sex scene' and explain the violent scenes better. I was reading books
with violent / sexual scenes by that age, but that's probably an argument against it, considering how I turned out.
CATFOTFIC - Complaining About The Flavor Of The Free Ice Cream
(especially about the actions of Cory, who, for all I have read, seems to detest censorship in all of it's forms.)
This is the bOINGer's internet home. If they say, 'No Little Brother criticism', people should not criticize Little Brother. The thing is, some things are 'just healthy' criticism, but the problem is, it very rarely remains just healthy criticism.
There's a -difference- between despising government censorship and free speech censorship, and being annoyed when people come into your house and criticize the decorations you have up because there's too much steampunk or awards certificates.
Wow
So wish I could be there. I just finished the book the other day and loved it! (few minor crits, but here is not the place ;)
#20 @Cefeida: I too would warn against giving this book to an 8-9 year old...
but I'm over 25 so don't trust me ;)
@Cory:
Not sure if you read these comments, but since I can't make it to one of your tour dates, I'll ask my question here: Are you afraid (paranoid?) of any potential fallout from this book in relation to ending up on some sort of "list"? I'm thinking not since you published it, and my hat's off to you... but I'd like your response if you can. Thanks in advance.
Phikus, they don't delete all comments digressing from their opinion, only the ones relating to Little Brother because it's become a BIG issue which hijacks threads. All dissenters in these situations must go because the community as a whole cannot keep to polite dissent. It's not unfairness, it's just keeping the threads from becoming cesspools. Unpleasant, yes, but as this is a moderated forum and not a democratic society, we must deal with it.
I'm closing this thread for the same reason that the other LB threads have been closed.
