Star Wars sand sculpture

Ukrainian sand sculptors the Zigura Brothers created this odd tribute to Star Wars. Yoda is a little too comfy on Vader's lap for my taste.

I have been wondering for years: does anybody know what the "sand sculpture professionals" mix into the sand to make these? I have seen the most incredible things and they hold together for a couple of weeks if protected from the rain and wind.

I am looking for the secret sand castle sauce recipe if any Boingers know it!

I'm just wondering when we'll have a full blown shine dedicated to star wars. Like a Tibetan or Buddhist temple. Complete with serious Jedi monks. Not just for fun but real. You know, like Scientology.

Hey Horncologne - I happen to be one of those "sand sculptor professionals". There are many factors that come into play -- some kinds of sand will stand better than others. High silt/clay content is important - the clay holds the moisture in longer. But to really make a sand sculpture last, spray a light solution of white (non-toxic, biodegradable) glue diluted with water on it _after it has been carved. They do this in Harrison Hot Springs (home of the world championship and tournament of champions) and keep the sculptures standing for months. (See harrisand.org.)

@sandyfeet: Whee! You made my day! Now I have time to study and prepare ... so you mean what we called "Elmer's Glue" at elementary school? Reg'ler, plain old, white glue ... any tips on the dilution ratio?

/me makes plans to kick the other dad's a**es at the sandcastle competition at the beach ... no more honorable mention for us! They can take their pathetic stupid cars and cutesy little submarines and try it on with The Force!
