Lizard Man exonerated
In March, Mark posted that the legendary Lizard Man of Lee County, South Carolina, was blamed for tearing up the front of Bob and Dixie Rawson's van. DNA tests on the blood on the vehicle show that it was actually a dog. Whew. From the Associated Press:

Bob Rawson isn't sure, saying it would have to be one big dog.Link (Thanks, Vann Hall!)
Lee County Sheriff E.J. Melvin isn't convinced either. He thinks it was a coyote or wolf.

(Feeling a bit pedantic today...)
It was not a wolf. Firstly, wild wolves don't live in South Carolina, as far as we know. Secondly, wolves are very secretive, and typically don't chew on cars. If Sheriff Melvin's logic is that only a big animal could make the bite marks, so it must be a wolf, that doesn't make much sense as many dogs are as big as wolves, sometimes larger.
A coyote might chew on a car, but coyotes are also small, smaller than people imagine (15 to 46 lbs according to wiki.) If the bite marks are so large that it seems a dog could not do them, a coyote certainly could not.
And thirdly, they are arguing against DNA evidence on... what? A hunch? A gut feeling? Nice to see that kind of evidence-based approach from law enforcement.
itty bitty puppykins woogies?

My guess is that someone took the car for an off-road joyride and hit a dog on the way back.
With damage like that, the fact that the blood tested as canine is even more troubling. No wolf, left alone coyote, is that big. There are bigger dogs, but could a dog rip up metal like that?
I just checked. Feb 28, 2008 was not a full moon. Still...
Umm, a few clues? 'South', 'Carolina', 'law enforcement'.
Put 'em all together, and it spells hickumentous. (And I say this as a Georgia ex-pat.)
So it wasn't Lizard man, but the Wolf Man!
AROOOOOO!!!
Having witnessed the tendency for cats to get inside engine compartments and the comment from previous link that several of their 20 cats have gone missing, I'm wondering if this was a frustrated attempt at dinner by said 'big dog'?
@spokehedz:
... and his hair was.... Perfect!
:)
Once again the pure ignorance of bOING bOING readers shows through. The facts speak for themselves people. We're obviously still dealing with a lizard man attack here. The lizard man used the car as a cutting board on which to carve up that tasty dog.
I see they are now using canine agents in their efforts to discredit me but I shall not be so easily smeared
now we have to kill you
OK, am I the only person who read the headline and thought this was a story about Erik Sprague?
... anyone?
