California's new gold rush

The Telegraph reports that rising gold prices and a lousy economy are driving a new wave of prospectors to California in search of gold.
Land claims in the western states have soared and the Gold Prospectors Association of America says its membership has grown by nearly 40 per cent in a few years to 45,000.

"There's a lot of excitement right now," said Walt Eason of the association. "It used to be that you might find $2,000 or $3,000 of gold after a week's work. Now it's possible that that figure could be $15,000 to $20,000."

And people say there's no plus side to government devaluation of the monetary supply through its inflationary policy. I'd consider this a silver lining.

I didn't realize this was a trend. This morning's Washington Post had an article about three guys who were trying to reclaim an old mine and they were found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning after they tried to use a gasoline powered pump to drain water from the mine. Possibly a Darwin Award.

A co-worker of mine lived in the mountains, panning for gold, during the last big spike in gold prices. He's described it as pretty much a pack of homeless meth heads living in the woods in tents and shacks. Great company!
