Teens desecrate grave to make pot pipe from skull
These gents from Houston are charged with abuse of a corpse after they confessed to digging up a grave to make a pot pipe from the skull. Kevin Wade Jones, 17, was being questioned about a vehicle burglary when he confessed to desecrating the grave a month earlier. Apparently, he and Matthew Richard Gonzales, both 17, and another juvenile dug up the skeleton of an 11-year-old boy who died almost a century ago. I'd love to hear the conversation that led to such a brilliant idea. From the Houston Chronicle:
Link (Thanks, Gil Kaufman!)Jones claimed he and his friends used shovels to dig up the body and removed the corpse's head with a garden tool, (Houston police officer Jim) Adkins said. Jones also revealed he and the other two boys took the severed head to the juvenile's home, where they used the skull as a "bong" to smoke marijuana, the officer said.

Tsk tsk . . . pot "heads".
Remember what the doormouse said: feed your head! Feed your head!
Head rush!
Should've just gone to a head shop.
I collect skulls. I won't kill anything for a skull, but if something is already dead...
Now, the bong part, that's just stupid. But I do recall many teenage days searching far and wide for bong materials.
And they'll think it bizarre when at age 45 they come down with some "inexplicable" disease that they just can't figure out where they got....
They look like such fine young men. I bet the Army could find something to do with them.
How do you smoke pot from a skull? Or was the skull just decoration for a real bong? It seems like there are too many holes to plug to make a skull watertight and smokeable.
What, no forehead tattoos?
one of the stupidest things i have read about today! did they think they could gain some kind of satanic powers by smoking herb thru a child's skull? oh, the stupidity! it seems for every intelligent person who dies, two idiots are born to take his place. whatever happenned to punching a few pinholes in a busch can?
How do you smoke pot from a skull?
Give me a skull and I'll come up with something. I've made bongs with worse materials.
From Reverend Horton Heat:
"Yeah, it's cool that you live in a shack
And it's cool that you're hooked on smack
Yeah, you used to be in a band
You're the coolest guy to all your fans
Now you're livin' on the edge your livin'
On the edge you're livin',
Livin' on the edge of Houston
Yeah, it's cool everybody knows
That you're in and out of jail
You're a tortured artistic soul
But your daddy always pays your bail
Now you're livin' on the edge your livin'
On the edge you're livin',
Livin' on the edge of Houston
Yeah, you can't afford a car
All your friends like your real nice life
And it's cool everybody knows
That you're sneaking into all the shows
Now you're livin' on the edge your livin'
On the edge you're livin',
Livin' on the edge of Houston
Livin' on the edge of Houston!
Livin' on the edge of Houston!"

Canadian teen makes sticky molecule in bid to diagnose, prevent flu
OTTAWA (AFP) - A Canadian high school student has won a national science competition for her new molecule that binds to flu viruses, which may eventually be used to diagnose or prevent flu infections.
Maria Merziotis, 17, took first prize in the 2008 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge, and will now go on to compete at the international BioGENEius Challenge in San Diego June 16-18.
Meanwhile, Health Canada is testing her research, and as a diagnostic tool it has already shown "encouraging results," said the government agency in a statement. ...
Not wonderful.
I have to wonder about the Satanic angle myself. I hope the police investigate a bit more into their background and who their friends are.
Big Deal...
Skull & Bones Yale has the skeleton of Geronimo, and who knows what they do with that thing.
My friend Jo Jo ran into someone that was dealing in skulls:
http://chicagoist.com/2007/05/02/skeletons_inside_jojos_closet.php
The story was well, weird. But Jo Jo attracts that kind of thing I guess...
I suspect this is just plain stupidity rather than satanism.
The conversation which lead to it probably started after smoking a few too many bowls while watching some historical/horror flick featuring skulls used as bowls or drinking cups or something of that sort.
"Hey, man. That's cool. I want one of those."
"Oh, wow. But it'd be even cooler if it was a bong." "Yeah. Where can we get a skull?"
Then neither of them's willing to back down as they sober up, for fear of looking like an idiot -- so instead they follow through and remove all doubt.
Teenagers. Too old to be cute, too young to be fully socialized. It's a miracle most of 'em survive without doing serious damage.
So why did they volunteer the info about grave robbing a 100 year old kids skull?
Life rule: Never blow up your own spot.
See Beavis and Butthead are reality based.
"Hey, like...dude. What if we made a bong out of a real live skull."
"Whoa, we could sell it on Ebay for hundreds!"
I grew up in a rural town and sadly it's not uncommon for redneck kids to be screwing with graves. Whether it's smashing 200 year-old headstones, knocking over headstones, breaking into crypts, or digging up graves - rural and remote cemeteries are at the mercy of the the community's bored and unattached youth. It's the kind of vandalism that can't be undone most of the time.
It could have been worse. It could have been way worse.
Heh...read the article...why am I not surprised that the little angels are home-schooled?
Wonder what their "pastor" has to say.
antinous, that's not so bad. Just kids sneaking off to enjoy a cold one.
The pain, the pain.
My friend Christian had a human skull in his room. We played catch with it once.
I was immediately reminded of the Two Headed
Boy of Bengal. His parents were offered lots
of money for his skull when he died but didn't
want to desecrate his body.
Some lovely fellow from the British
East India Company decided to rob his grave and
help himself to his skull anyway. It is now
displayed in a museum in England.
One day, Mitch, one day I will read the words 'British East India Company' in association with something honorable. One day. That day is not today. Or any of the days we went over it in history this year. Or tomorrow, most like.
Dude. Sticky Molecule.
I can totally tell you how this started.
//haze of smoke
"Dude... we need to go to the head shop and get more papers..."
"Haha..ha... head shop. Yo... bro... do you ever wonder why they call it a head shop?"
"Dude. Whoa."
"What if like... you smoked weed... FROM A HEAD. How crazy would that be man???"
"Holy shit, lets do it!"
I will keep my head on a glass of cold beer.
See kiddies, this is what happens when you outlaw the real thing.
Also: "That was my skull! I'm so wasted!!" - Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times At Ridgemont High
eleven years only? 1921? Oh that home "schooling" (one should never let one's schooling interfere with one's education) has much to answer for. It's a stretch, and a year late and at that latitude no real risk, but to be knocking on a demon's door even vaguely...
"As I went out through Dublin City
At the hour of twelve o'clock at night
Who should I see but a Spanish lady

I think if you've decided to rob a child's grave to make a skull bong, you're already high enough.
Roach, I agree.
I have hygiene issues with this concept, but does it speak poorly of me that I don't see why it matters? Child's grave or not?
because you are an innocent child. That is not the crime here, these were children too.
Tenn, I was thinking about that too.
From one perspective, a dead body can't suffer harm, so who's really harmed? But from another perspective, living people often have an irrational but real fear that their bodies will be desecrated when they die, so people might be happier to live in a society with a prohibition on grave desecration. So maybe there's a harm in that sense. Not at all an easy question. Related to the question of whether it's right for people to be able to leave their property to their relatives when they die.
I don't know if there is a crime here, Tak-san. But why have graves at all if it's ok to dig them up? The family of the kid who was buried there (if there are any still around) might be a bit distressed that some dumb goobers dug up their kids head to smoke pot out of it.
It's discourteous at the least.
the crime lies in the failures of the parents of these, as well as in the social web that let the failure happen. That does not excuse the grave robbers. They deserve being made to understand the harm they have done. As to graves; each to their own, but I feel that cremation and scattering of ashes makes the whole world holy and therefore deserving of the respect of all.
Well, yes, I can see the relatives having issue with it. Graverobbing should be prevented because of that. Boners mean little to me, though, and I plan to have my corpse donated. Cremation causes so much pollution. My mother takes offense to my choice and so I'm going to have to write up a will (and a living one) as soon as I hit eighteen.)
Takuan, once again I have to agree with you. Cremation and scattering of ashes seems to me to be best method of disposal. My mom and dad and 1/2 the grandparents went that way. I can feel them all around when I want to, without having to go to some cemetery.
Still, I'd like to bonk these stupid kids in the nose.
then be flash frozen and shaken to dust,or wrapped unenbalmed and buried under a cemetery garden tree.
Or not to worry about this shit since it is highly inappropriate and a waste of good living time to be concerned with the clownish antics of grieving monkeys.
Live. Now. If your organs benefit others, good. But a 17 year old has no business dealing with such. Morbid posing is best left to those that have spawned.
"wrapped unenbalmed and buried under a cemetery garden tree."
Always a good idea. But not only my organs! I plan to have my deorganified body given to investigatory sorts so they can play Where's Waldo version Tenn.
Taku-san, I'm not morbid! Death holds no horror for me. After AP exams, I've experienced the ninth circle of hell. Speaking of which, I think I passed the History one. I'd discuss it, but they implied summary execution for violators of the secrecy pact.
Meh. Dead bodies.
Don't be such a stiff, Kyle.
Kyle, aren't you askeered of zombies?
Ugh, people are making such a big deal about this
-these aren't the first grave robbers
-these aren't the first people to touch a human skull or use it for something other than a skull
-I'm sure they cleaned it and didn't press their faces onto a maggot-filled hole to take bonghits
-skull-shaped bongs are super common, so it's not surprizing that someone would want to make one with a real skull
I think the reason why this story is so popular is because these kids are obviously insane drug-crazed satanists who want to suck the souls of our loved ones
I remember that, a few years ago, three kids dug up a corpse to have sex with it, and that story wasn't all over the news like this one is
but oh god save us from these devil-worshipping weed-addicts!! tip a cow or steal a car but for heaven's sake don't touch an icky sacred corpse!!!
It's kind of almost a funny story, but something that should be on Fark and not on TV
"I'm sure they cleaned it and didn't press their faces onto a maggot-filled hole to take bonghits."
What makes you so sure?
Timefishblue,
Will you make me a human skull bong? I need one. thx.
along with my Donor Card permitting my organs to be used for science when the time comes, i'd like a second card permitting my skull to be used as a bong. I'll never have a lasting legacy artistically or politically, so the thought of my grinning bones sitting on someone's shelf for years after i'm gone is, well... pretty awesome.

Stoners are seriously the most industrious people I know. How many alcoholics do you know that would go to this kind of trouble for something they could only think up in a state of altered consciousness?
There was a recent incident of skull-robbery here in Edinburgh(Imagine, grave robbing in Edinburgh!)Wher a couple o' young ner do wells did "desecrate a sepulcher" But the heid the stole had a more sinster past that any of the poor wee miscreants

Regarding the hygiene issue, sucking on a 100 year old skill would be about the same as getting a mouthful of dirt. Everything soft has decayed into compost.
Other things to do in Denver when you're dead (aside from the obvious burial or cremation):
- Donate your body to science. They might dissect you, clean your bones, or even turn you into one of those Body Worlds plasticized people. I saw BW2, and that's a pretty awesome fate.
- Taxidermy! Give your loved ones something they can always remember you by (mostly because your eyes will appear to follow them around the room)
- Life-sized Operation game. I hear you can even get pre-wired for it while you're alive!
- And, of course, you can come back as a zombie.
I think that taboos against certain behaviors are examples of encoded ancient wisdom. Just as the taboo against eating pig flesh protects one from trichinosis or a taboo against cannibalism protects one from prions.
There are a lot of nasties that can be present at a graveyard but apart from health concerns, respect for the dead because you too will one day join their ranks seems pretty good to me.
Noen - does that hold for all kinds of ranks?
Tell those young idealists to have respect for old conservatives, because one day...
I'd like to reiterate to whomever might be still confused that this is NOT an issue of satanism, and I'm loathe to even call it a symptom of excessive pot use; it's just a case of utter fucking stupidity. Had they been alcoholics instead of potheads they'd have dug up the skull to drink out of; if they were just smokers they'd have used it as an ashtray. Lack of ambition to anything greater than their present state of pumping gas means they have to get their jollies from violation rather than accomplishment.
"'Look, dude, I just made a bong out of my head! Put the weed in this ear and suck it out of this one!'" -- Dennis Leary, No Cure For Cancer
anthrax spores survive for decades underground. When the two principal missions to recover the Great Pandemic flu genome were undertaken, there was fear and precautions before the digging.
Well License Farm you don't actually know that do you? I agree that the odds favor teh stupid but that isn't the same as knowing.
Weighted, I have respect for old conservatives. It's this new batch I have zero respect for. They are neither new (neo) nor conservative (con) but in fact something very old (fascists).
I used to tell my mother that I was going to have her stuffed when she died. Unsurprisingly, she left ironclad instructions and pre-payment with the local funeral director. She was cremated before I could even get downtown. Even wrote her own obit, thirty years in advance.
These aren't satanists. They're christians. That's the fine moral upbringing of home-schooling at work.
It's all that "take, eat, this is my flesh" stuff in the Bible, it promotes cannibalism. The "resurrection" stories are all about desecrating graves.
Disgusting death cult produces bad behavior. It's only surprising that more christians aren't caught doing this.

Is this sarcasm? Would you say the same of Muslims? Or Jews? Or Vodun practitioners (okay, the last is granted)...
It's not the Christianity leading to this. It's them being effing stupid.
Though Vodun practitioners would probably use the skull for something more important and venerate it appropriately, of course.
I keep reading about "home schooling" in this case as if it were automatically associated with fundamentalism. There's a much more likely reason: they've been expelled from school permanently for disruptive or damaging behavior.
Note that they were also significant suspects in an auto theft case. Also note that the skull as bong story was told with little to no emotion. That's definitely someone who's used to dealing with police, mentally ill or (most probably) both.
Regarding home schooling, there are other motivations as well. I've talked with several people who have taught in the Colorado school systems.
Very few of the schools are functional in regards to preparing someone for higher education. The state run colleges here are also sub-par.
I can also imagine feeling it necessary to do that in Kansas precisely TO avoid the fundamentalist harassment. It would be interesting to actually research the percentage of home schooling parents who do it for because they are fundamentalists. I'd guess it's far less than 100.
hey license farm (@62), do you know these morons? er, i'm sorry, intellectually challenged sufferers?
I don't know what's worse; these guys trying to smoke pot from a skull, or our fear of death.
my distaste for ignorant behaviour has nothing to do with fear of death save that these may not live long enough to learn.
I don't want to call down a jinx, but have you noticed how calm it's been this weekend?

"I don't want to call down a jinx"...

Myself personally, I say that everyone needs to jump off the religious Trip because it isn't an act of spiritual Demonstrated more rather then an act of simple teenage rebelliousness being taken far out of hand, furthermore these teens are probably victims of Bible thumping Parents who force feed religion as
A way of life, Before Judging these 3 teens as "Satanist" Remember the word of god as he said That he shall be the judge and judgement comes at your own biddings, I am not a Godly person but I do have a spiritual life one that I can say is sadly misunderstood and furthermore Even though the act itself is unmoral in our society it still is not wrong, The Shocking Response of the World towards these teens for there acts is proof that The world Today is very Materialistic The lord our father said
We are to die and be reborn in the flesh of our spirits leaving our bodies abandoned and Empty The Corpse is only left lay out of respect not because the Person who once Hosted the body is thus in!
And Finally I see that The act of "grave Robbing"
Should Not Be A Felony Crime for the victims this comes to you at your own risk for trying to take Materialistic Value to the land of the dead, Also the act of Robbing a grave has a huge penalty of its own, for the Dormant body even though lie dead maybe from unnatural causes, You nor we know what really kills people Naturally Thus the germs and antibodies in us may be viral plagues that lay dormant and grow into severe illnesses and also for the "Hibby Gibby" Squad it promotes Carma something a lot of us believe in, no matter what religious back ground Quote me if you like I do not promote nor am i saying its Right but it is over penalized for the act of Grave Robbing
