Pre-Revolutionary Cuban advertisement art

LambdaCalculus379 sez, "This is a Picasa photo gallery of advertisements from 1950's pre-Castro Cuba. Many of these ads are beautiful examples of art from the era, and it would be a terrible shame to see these ads fade into obscurity. Ads range from things like department stores and movies to popular Cuban nightlife and iconic Cuban rums." Link (Thanks, LambdaCalculus379!)

Love the ad touting the Morro Castle for a cruise down to Havana - that won't end well.
Back before Castro came in to power, Cuba was a beautiful nation, ahead of the times in many ways (e.g. Cuba was the second nation in the world to introduce color TV). The 1950s were the peak of culture, until the Embargo and Castro's coming to power.
Cuba today appears to be frozen in time, but hopefully things will turn around there and Cuba will be restored to its glory.
mmm, seems like a nice place..... lessee...
My old roommate went to our Halloween party dressed as Storm.
Everybody thought she was Li'l Kim.
I was embarrassed on behalf of the world.

Can I complain about something unrelated? I just went to the mailbox to find a jury duty summons. For Federal Court in Los Angeles, 130 miles away from here. WTF?
old address list
No. Just pure evil.
Altered States
Antinous you have no choice but to come down and do your civic duty, and also get drunk on soju at Dan Sung Sa.
I just got out of local jury duty last week on a medical excuse! What are they thinking asking someone to drive 240 miles round trip? The gas alone would be a day's pay for me.
that was a freebie to make you feel better

Antin, I sympathize about jury duty. I've shown up after being summoned a couple times in the last few years and it was pretty interesting. But I didn't have to drive more than 20 miles or so.
I guess that out in the far west desert, people (government bureaucrats) haven't really yet figured out the price of gas and the cost of transportation.
I've heard of "Superman versus the Mole Men"
No moles were harmed in the making of this puzzle Takuan.
I'm, er, ashamed to know the title, but, uh, -cough- Humanoids from the Deep?
Some of us humanoids from the deep may take exception to your comment, Tenn.
"They're not human. But they hunt human women. Not for killing. For mating."
Please. I saw that in the theater.
I'm glad, Jake. That may discourage some of you humanoids from the deep. From hunting some of us human women.
Well obviously not Antinous.
hey,he's got to eat too
Nope, older.

No sensei (what movie IS that?)
Invisible Agent. And don't call me sensei. I carried that long enough, earned and undeserved.
Nice new club-house folks, well suggested Ant.
Cool Central Americanny vibe with the decor.. I like.
And also, this is surely the nearest to the surface we've ever played.. only 5 down.. we're practically running through the BB corridors, naked, waving game banners.. Fill your lungs gang, that's fresh air :)

Enemy Mine?
Enemy Mine isn't older than mine, Ark. Tak, I kept trying to remember the movie that had 'Invisible' in it and wasn't 'Invisible Man'. I vindictively hope you are wrong.
Well, duh, you are wrong. Sister Y decreed it, she did.
Nope. Older, older, older.
Sorry Takuan. Respect, I has it.
The Golem?
No but I want to see that.

holy crap, I thought u were suggesting rob roy for takuan's..
i was feeling pretty retarded.
phew..
Arkizzle, my brother, I do not want to be a prickly pain in the ass (unintentionally) but that word so commonly used by so many in an innocent but careless way is a little barb into me every time I hear or see it. I know for these times it perhaps does not carry the same freight as fifty years ago. I had a neighbor with a son who was born with Down's Syndrome.
I can't tell any more. Does it still hurt? Can any reader out there confirm for me? Am I being foolish?
Taku-san,
In theory for me the phrase 'retarded' shouldn't be used so carelessly, and sometimes I feel a little barb as well. It feels inescapable, though, but you're certainly not being a foolish little prickly pickle.
a thorny gherkin? Is there anyone in your clan or tribe that is still hurt by it then?
Xeni got busted for using 'tard' the other day.
yeah, I was in that brawl. I firmly believe no evil is done by those who intend no evil, there is nothing to forgive.
Nobody I can recall. We avoid saying 'schizo' unless we mean it medically, though, and that's similar I guess. One of my friend's stepdad killed himself because of schiz-hallucinations.
I can understand that. Schizophrenia holds no mystery or fear for me.
I think I get upset with "retard" because the first image I see on hearing it is the face of a child, crushed.
I can tolerate and even enjoy outrageous cruelty directed at someone who has the will and option to strike back likewise.
No one has gotten my puzzle yet.
But I can't stay because I have to go hang out with my friend who accidentally washed her contact lenses in hydrogen peroxide and then immediately put one of them in her eye.
She just got out of the hospital. She is expected to recover full eyesight.
I just want to mention here that she went to Yale.
Perhaps the word "retarded" has changed referents over the years?
That is all.
We had a patient once who stuck a Q-Tip in his ear, then pulled a sweater over his head, thus puncturing his eardrum. He was a very high-ranking government official. I'm just sayin'...

underground officers - I remember Lemuria? Was there a movie made about that?

God damn... every time I turn around, I miss the show..
Takuan,
Well I'm not sure of the answer to your question, whether 'retarded' means anything to me any more, but it clearly means something to you.
I haven't seen the thread with Xeni's take-down, but I'm glad it's not a rumpus in here.
For me, I think the word has lost a lot of it's original meaning, like most words in this ilk, it goes from preferred-medical-usage to common-parlance to offensive (then to 'ironic', if you're a hep intarwebber).
I don't find it that offensive, but I understand why others may.
Although I will continue to use it in my own parlance, I will try my utmost, barring only a faulty mass-storage-chip in my brain, to not use the word on this board again, if only for the sake of your poor over-barbed hide.
I hope that doesn't read sarcastically, it was not intended in the slightest.
I have nothing but respect for you guys, and in truth; Takuan in particular (slimey bits aside).
Dear Izzle:
"I firmly believe no evil is done by those who intend no evil, there is nothing to forgive."
now, are we going to solve these godsdamned puzzles!?

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.
Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension
And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]
You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.
And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.
Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
Promises promises.
Beautiful song/poem, makes me want to finally watch Casablanca.
Also, in my catching up, I've finally reached this article. Woo, only 3 1/2 more days worth of BB to wade through!
...of course Monday I get my teeth yanked out, so I'm sure I'll be 4 days behind again in no time.
haha. Wisdom teeth is it? I had that done last winter. It was bril. I took a day out of life to drool blood all over myself while hopped up on the funny gas and watching every film based on a comic I could think of. For some reason, I think of watching films based on comics as research, and so not a complete waste of time. Totally drank before and after as well. Eh.
lots of digression,no puzzle solving....
Cave cops. Seriously, I'm out on this one.
NO SURRENDER!
Hint: comment #57 contains both parts of the solution (with one minor spelling change).

got mine yet?
There you go!
I actually got to see that recently with a 96-year-old accompanist, who had been a sort of child musical prodigy and had accompanied the movie when it first came out.
I am working on yours. I saw some insane undersea creatures at the aquarium today and thought of you.
my nephew perhaps?
A guess: Bubba Ho-tep? (Uncle Ho, tepid, etc.)
aw jeez, tell me ya got help at least! Yah.... Elvis lives!
No help, I rule.
Unless you count IMDB as help.
Good night good sir.
