Pre-Revolutionary Cuban advertisement art

LambdaCalculus379 sez, "This is a Picasa photo gallery of advertisements from 1950's pre-Castro Cuba. Many of these ads are beautiful examples of art from the era, and it would be a terrible shame to see these ads fade into obscurity. Ads range from things like department stores and movies to popular Cuban nightlife and iconic Cuban rums." Link (Thanks, LambdaCalculus379!)

Love the ad touting the Morro Castle for a cruise down to Havana - that won't end well.

Back before Castro came in to power, Cuba was a beautiful nation, ahead of the times in many ways (e.g. Cuba was the second nation in the world to introduce color TV). The 1950s were the peak of culture, until the Embargo and Castro's coming to power.

Cuba today appears to be frozen in time, but hopefully things will turn around there and Cuba will be restored to its glory.

Antin, I sympathize about jury duty. I've shown up after being summoned a couple times in the last few years and it was pretty interesting. But I didn't have to drive more than 20 miles or so.

I guess that out in the far west desert, people (government bureaucrats) haven't really yet figured out the price of gas and the cost of transportation.

Arkizzle, my brother, I do not want to be a prickly pain in the ass (unintentionally) but that word so commonly used by so many in an innocent but careless way is a little barb into me every time I hear or see it. I know for these times it perhaps does not carry the same freight as fifty years ago. I had a neighbor with a son who was born with Down's Syndrome.

I can't tell any more. Does it still hurt? Can any reader out there confirm for me? Am I being foolish?

Take a look at this
#48 posted by Tenn , May 10, 2008 3:53 PM

Taku-san,
In theory for me the phrase 'retarded' shouldn't be used so carelessly, and sometimes I feel a little barb as well. It feels inescapable, though, but you're certainly not being a foolish little prickly pickle.

Nobody I can recall. We avoid saying 'schizo' unless we mean it medically, though, and that's similar I guess. One of my friend's stepdad killed himself because of schiz-hallucinations.

Take a look at this
#53 posted by Takuan , May 10, 2008 4:30 PM

I can understand that. Schizophrenia holds no mystery or fear for me.

I think I get upset with "retard" because the first image I see on hearing it is the face of a child, crushed.

I can tolerate and even enjoy outrageous cruelty directed at someone who has the will and option to strike back likewise.

No one has gotten my puzzle yet.

But I can't stay because I have to go hang out with my friend who accidentally washed her contact lenses in hydrogen peroxide and then immediately put one of them in her eye.

She just got out of the hospital. She is expected to recover full eyesight.

I just want to mention here that she went to Yale.

Perhaps the word "retarded" has changed referents over the years?

That is all.

God damn... every time I turn around, I miss the show..

Takuan,

Well I'm not sure of the answer to your question, whether 'retarded' means anything to me any more, but it clearly means something to you.

I haven't seen the thread with Xeni's take-down, but I'm glad it's not a rumpus in here.

For me, I think the word has lost a lot of it's original meaning, like most words in this ilk, it goes from preferred-medical-usage to common-parlance to offensive (then to 'ironic', if you're a hep intarwebber).

I don't find it that offensive, but I understand why others may.

Although I will continue to use it in my own parlance, I will try my utmost, barring only a faulty mass-storage-chip in my brain, to not use the word on this board again, if only for the sake of your poor over-barbed hide.

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension

And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
