Little Brother tour-schedule: Chicago, Milwaukee, Seattle, San Francisco, NYC

Sunday night, I fly to Chicago to kick off my three-week US book-tour for Little Brother, my new young adult novel. I'll be stopping in and around Chicago, Milwaukee, Seattle, San Francisco and (probably) New York. The schedule's still being firmed up, but Tor (my publisher) is keeping an up-to-the-minute schedule for each appearance. This is my first publisher-financed tour, and I'm incredibly excited! I hope to meet lots of you on the road! Link

Ouch! Sorry I'll miss you. Leaving Naperville (you're there next Wednesday) for Mequon (you're there next Friday) on Friday then off for a week in Ontario (you're in TO tomorrow). You're hitting my favorite bookstores when I'm out of town. Quite the coincidence. Like the time I missed Terry Pratchett. Thankfully Terry came again a couple of years later and I got to hear him. Hopefully you will do the same.

Cheers and good luck with the book!

@4, 7: Indeed, I will be posting about Little Brother daily for a couple of months at least. I'll be mentioning each day's tour stops, all the new Instructables, any really cool remixes, any awards it wins, etc. At least once, often twice a day. Sometimes more, as events warrant.

@5: Almost all - I'm covering half the overseas flight from London so I can go Premium Economy, which is a lot easier on my back (and my sciatica).

@6: Not this time! I do get to Portland every couple years, though.

For the record, Mequon is not Milwaukee. Mequon is the far, far, white, white northern suburbs.

If you actually get into Milwaukee, I'll buy you a beer.

Also - it's your book and your site. Plug away. I can skip an article, no sweat.

Wow, people are snarky. If you aren't allowed to self promote on your own damn website, what the heck good is it? People are willing to scroll past other newsbites they don't care about, but this one is too much for them? Boing boing is MUCH to interesting to leave because of one set of posts.

sorry to hear you won't be coming to Portland this time around. I just finished the book, and I'd love to shake your hand.

Good for you for not pulling punches in a YA book. I think that I'm going to be buying copies of this for the young'ins in my life (though, really, i should just mail them the link to the download. 'Paper books are so passe, dude.')

Question: A few times in this book you mention things that lead me to suspect you've spent some time at the BIG renaissance faire in so. cal (or northern cal, before it closed). Have you? I was a performer in a group down there for 8 years; imma gonna kick myself if i never realized you were there.

I'm actually pretty happy to be reading the posts on the book here - it was nice to know when it came out and when it was available online so I could check it out while waiting for the local store to get a copy in for me. Now, I'm even happier to find out that the book tour is stopping up at Elliott Bay :)

The anti-promotion comments are hilarious. I can't understand the sense of entitlement these posters feel towards BB; if you're not interested, skip over it or make your own blog! How can you possibly go to someone else's website and tell them to stop posting what they feel? It does not make sense. Cory could post pictures of his shit for all I care, I wouldn't be interested but I'm not going to tell him to stop.

BB is not a personal service to you. It does not owe you cool stories every morning. It just happens to do so.

Doublethink - I agree! Well said, better than I could. It is just like when ppl complain about shows on TV -- I say if you don't like it then turn it off! Or change the channel. (I'm talking about free TV not cable). But don't complain, you're not paying for it! and you have a choice.

I want to jump on the "what-?-you're-not-coming-to-[insert-my-city-here]-?" bandwagon.

I am shocked and dismayed that you have not yet finagled the publisher to include a trip to *cough*DisneyWorld*cough* Orlando.

Seriously, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom is a staple in every bookstore within 15 miles of Disney World. Seems like a pretty good potential base of readers to recruit for Little Brother.

Time it takes to scroll past an article you don't care to read: 0.5 seconds

Time it takes to make a negative comment on a post you don't care to read: 30 seconds

Conclusion: 29.5 seconds wasted AND you get to come across as a jerk.

PS: Stop in Vancouver, BC one day Cory. I owe you a pub night for all the great entertainment you've provided over the years.

I've been meaning to drive up to San Francisco and hang with a friend of mine, so I might coincide that with your tour.

I really really enjoyed the book. Please continue to give us updates about its success and all the related instructables and remixes, etc. That's the whole point of the book to begin with.

@#32

I'm in the camp of folks that are a little tired of the incessant posts about Little Brother (2 posts on the front page? really?) but I have to agree.

It's clear that Cory has every right to make these kinds of posts and has no intention of stopping, so I'm at a loss as to why folks keep wasting so much time complaining about something they have no power to change. It's annoying and embarrassing for everyone involved.

Honestly, at this point I think Cory ought to just disable comments on his posts about this book so that the mods don't have to waste their time trying to decide which bitchy posts go over the line and which are appropriate.

New internet shorthand: CATFOTFIC - Complain(er) About The Flavor Of The Free Ice Cream.

Don't CATFOTFIC. It's jerky.

Don't be a CATFOTFIC. They are all jerks.

Those of us who've been eagerly awaiting the next bit of Little Brother news are especially annoyed by you CATFOTFICs. And for those "threatening" to "leave" over this, I have another shorthand for you: DLTDHYITA.

Cory, I'm hoping for NYC dates. I'd cross my fingers, but it's awfully hard to type that way.

Just to back up BILLY RAY (#12)--Mequon, WI seems like an odd choice to promote this book. Very suburban--totally lacking in urban culture. The Harry Schwartz location in Mequon is pretty small and it is in a crappy strip mall. Furthermore, it is far enough from the urban center of Milwaukee that many of your readers may decide to not attend.

Harry Schwartz is an okay local bookstore chain. They have other store locations in the area that probably cater more to your demographics (e.g., Shorewood or Downer Ave--both of which are closer to the major local universities). You might want to bring that up with the promotions director at your publisher.

Take a look at this

Enough with the whining. You sound like a bunch of old ladies at their fourth Ramones concert: If you don't like the tunes, why the hell come back?

If you had a book coming out, I guarantee you'd be doing all the self-promotion you had time for. Nuttin' wrong with that. And if you weren't, you'd be a fool.

Scroll past. Repeat as necessary.

You do it with other stories without a gripe. Why treat the Little Brother posts differently?

Cory: Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville is a great place for a signing. See you there.

Darn! It's a little tough to come down from Sacramento to the Bay Area on a weeknight, so I'll miss out on the fun.

Have a great time on the tour!

Just thought I'd pass this along...
So I was in Cali for vacation this past week (went to the maker faire!) and was in the Berkeley area. I stopped into two "indy" bookstores on Friday the 2nd (it might have been Thurs, I can't remember), anyway, neither Cody's nor Pegasus had your book! :(
I ended up buying it at Barnes and Nobel (Last copy on the shelf). Gotta crack the whip and get into those indy stores too :)
IF you can add Philly to your list that'd be great.
enjoying the book so far. I like the "gait cams".

Thanks for the download, Corey. You talk the talk... and walk it too!

Those of you who want Cory to stop posting about Little Brother can give up right now, because it's not going to happen. Cory's written a book that really is getting major attention from kids, teachers, librarians, booksellers, civil libertarians, etc., which in turn is focusing a whole lot of attention on a set of issues that are dear to Cory's heart. Promoting the book isn't just ego. It's part of the fight.

...

Doctor Pickles, I thank you for being mindful of the moderators, but that particular decision isn't all that hard.

Junior Mad Scientist, I love the image of old ladies attending their fourth Ramones concert.

...

About the stops on Cory's book tour: Tor Marketing and Publicity made those decisions, not Cory.

This afternoon I phoned Dot Lin, a very excellent Tor publicist, intending to find out why Tor chose some book tour locations and not others. And in fact Dot did tell me; but while I understand enough about trade fiction marketing and publicity that I could follow her explanation, I can't summarize it well enough to not be inadvertently miseading. I'm a fluent speaker of editorial and production, but I only have a listening knowledge of marketing and publicity.

Although Cory, of course, has every right to post about his book as much as he wants, and I laud his ability to self-market in a way I wish I could emulate, I can sympathize with the people who complain.

Have you ever been at a party with someone you've just met and you're having a conversation, and they continuously find some way to make the topic all about them? Or they make the most convoluted connection about a topic to lead back to them?

That's how the constant Little Brother posts come across. And no one wants to talk to that guy at the party.

Like I said, I wish I had the drive to self-promotion that Cory does - I'd be a much bigger success in life, and it seems to work really well for him.

Just thought I would add some observation to the discussion.

I now know what Brain in a Blender feels like. First, I read DAEMON by Leinad Zeraus and just finished LITTLE BROTHER. LB is an amazing book, an important book. I just ordered a second copy from Borders to give to the son of a friend. I plan to buy as mny copies as I can afford to give to the teens and YA's in my social circle.

Thank you Cory Doctorow for putting into words the outrage I feel. I'm 62 years old and was in college 1964-1968. I experienced the draft, found a way out and worked with a group helping others do the same. I went to two funerals of friends who came back from Vietnam in a bag. I had a Dallas cop put a shotgun in my stomach while in line to buy Jimi Hendrix tickets because I tried to help a friend who had passed out from the heat.
These are just some of my experiences from those years.

Thank you Cory Doctorow

Thank you Cory Doctorow

Except it's not. Because the person in the party is only talking about himself. Cory's telling us when / where we can get Little Brother related stuff, how we can help give copies to the world, and maybe where we can see him on tour (except for the neglected South -cough-).

I read LB because of a post- the ebook post. The updates on LB are helpful information.

And you guys, I checked my RSS search. Typed in the terms "little brother". Got 35 results.

Typed in "boingboing". Got thousands.

What does this mean? Perhaps that proportionally there are NOT that many Little Brother posts. A lot less than steampunk. It's just- once you start focusing on the fact they exist, it seems like there are millions of them. There aren't.

Actually, it's more like having someone invite you into their yard and up onto their porch to look at all the cool gadgets and toys and paintings and books and stuff that they've discovered and accumulated over the years, and having them periodically say "Hey, I just found out my book got translated into French! Ooh, this is neat — it's a photo of a coprolite. And here's Isabella Rossellini's bug porn. Are you going to be in San Francisco next week? I'm having a book signing. Want a free copy of the book? Take one, give a copy to a friend, whatever — hope you like it. Look, a video of a guy sticking a lemon up his nose!"

If you don't want to hear him enthusing about his book, don't come up on his porch. But if you do come up on the porch, don't be rude enough to try to tell him what he can and can't talk about.

@19 Enochrewt, what are the odds that Tor and Cory will be at the Denver SF Worldcon in August, though?? Maybe Tor will arrange a signing at Tattered Cover while in town then?

It looks like Tattered Cover is only a mile away from the convention center, and there appears to be a free shuttle along 16th Street - handy for the pilgramage!

I'm looking forward to the SF area signings (heck, I'll buy a third copy of the book if I manage to make it to one), but one at 5:30pm and another at 7pm on the same day? "We're out of time here, guys, follow me to the other book store!"

Lastly, everyone remember to wear a red cape and goggles if you're going to blog about being at the signing. Nose lemons optional.
