I don't think that they ever go out of style. Although it would be totally okay with me if BB also adopted another favorite artist who's obsessed with pornographically proportioned, semi-nude men. I'm just sayin'...
Benschomatic, this has been a popular theme since way before 1996.
Many themes survive decades or centuries. I would argue this is just a continuation of the formerly thriving chariots'n'harlots genre that swept Rome at the beginning of the last millennium. I bet one of those t-shirts would fetch a mint right now.
Optic: your comment is offensive. We posted this print because we love Coop's work. Also, he has given us hundreds of wonderful site suggestions that we've postd to BB over the years, including the "least wanted music" post yesterday. He is a "fifth Boinger."
"Giclée" is one of those terms that irritates me to no end. It's just a borderline unethical way to deceive people who don't know that it means inkjet print. I make a point not to buy art from people who use the term.
Oh look, it's the giclée vs. inkjet argument again.
Here's the answer (again):
Granted, "giclée" is sometimes wrongly used (with or without intent to deceive) to describe plain old inkjet prints. However, that doesn't mean that "giclée" and "ink jet print" mean the same thing, or that the printing processes are the same.
In Coop's case, they really are giclée prints.
Mark Frauenfelder @15: "Optic" has posted two comments to Boing Boing. The previous one, posted last December in the comment thread of an entry about one of Coop's prints, says "Hw mch ds bngbng dvrtrl cst? s thr rtcrd?"
I don't know whether his his beef is with you, Coop, or giclée prints. I suspect it's all of the above, since he only appears when the three elements are in conjunction. Aside from that, he's not our problem.
Just as an aside to "anonymous" #15 & #18... you do know that I also created the Lords Of Acid Voodoo U cover art, right? Because accusing me of ripping myself off would kinda make you look like, uh, an idiot.
In fact, if anyone bothered to read about the painting this print comes from, they would see that the devil girl imagery is a very self-conscious nod to their ubiquity in pop culture over the last fifteen years. From the press kit for the exhibition:
Man, people are hating on Coop and giclees pretty hard. I thought BoingBoing was a place of LOVE. I like Coop's work, but don't really dig this recent one. Something about the typeface elements makes it seem cluttered.
Well I fucking love it, and I'm a big fan of Coop's work, and that's why I posted it. And if you can't dig it, baby the space bar is your friend. There are always many, many other posts on this blog to choose from.
The Voodoo U cover art was what got me interested in Coop's work in the first place... The cover was awesome and it didn't take much effort to figure out who created it... Anyway, Coop's stuff still rocks, and I hope BB keeps on covering it...

These prints are created with archival paper and inks, using sophisticated machinery that is constantly calibrated. In many ways these prints are actually superior to silkscreen prints, and like it or not, they're going to be around for a while.
But hey, the good news is I'm not driving to your house and forcing you to buy them. In fact they're already nearly sold out.
Anonymous Ruth @36: Thanks for the amplified explanation. The giclée/inkjet thing comes up way too often when one of the Boingers blogs a giclée print. I'm thinking of instituting a policy that goes, "If you care that much about printmaking, how come you don't know that giclée prints are a different process?"
I'll happily take guff from anyone who knows more about printing than I do.
Benschomatic, Igor no like permanently contrarian commenters. Easy gig, takes no judgement.
Moderator: You missed #33. If you're going to censor, please be thorough.
I work for a printing company and I can say that giclées can be of really great quality in the hands of the right people using good equipment and the right paper. They are sprayed and not ink to plate to paper offset printed, but I think people would be hardpressed to come up with anything comparable on any typical consumer inkjet regardless of cost. A real good Iris machine runs a good 5 or 6 figures.
I work for a printing company and I can say that giclées can be of really great quality in the hands of the right people using good equipment and the right paper.
You're not going to see a particle of disagreement out of me on that one.
They are sprayed and not ink to plate to paper offset printed,
Yes.
but I think people would be hardpressed to come up with anything comparable on any typical consumer inkjet regardless of cost. A real good Iris machine runs a good 5 or 6 figures.
Technology just keeps moving. I remember when the equivalent of PhotoShop required a dedicated machine that cost as much as the mortgage on a McMansion.
Go ahead and critique the printing on Coop's latest, if that's what you're leading up to. Just be civil about it, and remember that he and his wife are in the audience.
Don't be civil on MY account - just don't be full of shit either.
And don't make personal attacks and expect them to be seen as lofty and objective offerings.
You don't like Coop - wonderful - you don't have to. Just don't try to damage his reputation by lying about the quality of something you've never seen just to make yourself look good.
Very cool, indeed!
Nice print! But could we finally retire the word "giclée"? It's nothing more than an invented term for inkjet prints.
Supposed to be a late 50's Chevvy, but it's too stubby. Can't make out the other two.
Hmm…
Muscle cars and voluptuous devil women.
This was mildly interesting in 1996.
Guess it's still selling in 2008.

I'm taking the time out of my day to criticize things, too!
i like erotic art of a highbrow and lowbrow nature, and while i don't drive, i can appreciate interesting cars, but...
The way it has four equally-sized square elements makes me think it would look badass printed on a cookie tin. It would be a most rockin' cookie tin.

I'd put this theme of devil ladies well before 1996. Cover art for Lords of Acid album Voodoo U circa 1994, uh, totally NSFW.
"Giclée" is one of those terms that irritates me to no end. It's just a borderline unethical way to deceive people who don't know that it means inkjet print. I make a point not to buy art from people who use the term.
Yes, Giclée sucks, Coop doesn't, and this is a print, that is, a reproduction of an artwork. The original is, you know, kinda large.

Stop saying 'tempera'!!!! It's just egg and colored dirt!!!!!
Also, those things you're fraudulently calling lithographs? They're really just printed on paper.

Hey, this is Coop, the actual artist.
"With a nod to both the scale and the bold iconography used by James Rosenquist, Coop appropriates the very pop-culture imagery that he has created (women, devils, cars, etc.) by dissecting, fragmenting and examining their parts. By reassembling these crucial elements, and therefore re-contextualizing, he has transformed them into a new whole. As these images have been reconfigured, Coop found it necessary to produce them in something not recently associated with his work; the classic medium of painting. Using acrylics, these works contain a deep texture that details the creative hand when viewing them closely. But as the viewer steps back and experiences the large work as a constructed whole, the acrylic lines display a cohesive sensibility."
The Lords of Acid cover was illustrated by Coop.
Man, people are hating on Coop and giclees pretty hard. I thought BoingBoing was a place of LOVE. I like Coop's work, but don't really dig this recent one. Something about the typeface elements makes it seem cluttered.

True, some people still love to bash on giclees, but to me it just shows ignorance, especially when the true info is so easy to find.
