Sisters rescued from horrific circus sideshow
Two sisters, 19 and 16, were rescued from an Italian circus where they were forced to swim with piranha and have snakes draped across them. The Bulgarians sisters, and their parents, were allegedly held as "slaves" by the Marino Circus. From The Guardian:
A spectator tipped off the police after watching, Giusi, the elder girl, try to escape from the piranha tank as her head was allegedly held down.Link (via Fortean Times)
Her sister Olga was bitten by snakes that she was forced to drape on her body, and she had injuries to her stomach where the snakes had wound themselves too tightly around her...
According to reports, Giusi had a tumour on her ear and was told to never submerge it in cold water. But the piranha tank was kept at almost freezing temperatures to make the fish lethargic.

I am not a doctor, but this: Giusi had a tumour on her ear and was told to never submerge it in cold water. But the piranha tank was kept at almost freezing temperatures to make the fish lethargic. seems made up and sensational. The story is bad enough without these little tack-ons that are added on to almost every one of these type of stories.
Nope, you're not a doctor. But what has this to do with anything that you've said?
amazing that these things can happen in western europe.
You'd think those people were still living in the Dark Ages, trading in humans as if they were dealing in livestock.
The article says the authorities hope to catch the mobsters who sold the family, but it seems like every time I read about that sort of thing, the investigations fizzle out.
How do you suppose it can be that me - a regular working stiff - could theoretically go buy a human slave relatively easily, yet the authorities native to those regions are mystified as to who could possibly be behind this?
I hate to be Captain Outrage over here, but it really is disgusting. Thank goodness I live in a place where slavery isn't a concern.
#4: You live in Liechtenstein?
Piranha are a tropical species. If you kept them in water that is "almost freezing" they wouldn't be lethargic. They'd be dead.
That's really awful. It's sickening that things like that still happen today. I hope those two young women will be able to get whatever medical and therapeutic attention they'll need after this ordeal.
This story is a bit suspicious-sounding, even for the Guardian.
Is it just me who thought:
"You're my wife now, Dave!"
?
Sorry...
Every time I read a story about Italy or somehing Italian on BB lately, it involves mobsters somehow. Is that just a coincidence?
It's really hard to believe that this type of thing happens in the civilized world still.
#10: Wait a minute... what about the horrible case of Megan Williams, tortured and kept as a slave (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6992739.stm)?
Did it happen in Italy or right there in your backyard?
What I mean, #10, is: human beings just suck, here in Italy and elsewhere in what you call the "civilized world". Please, don't play the angel.
It does sound a little over the top, but here's a news report, with the pirhana tub

There were clips shown on TV from phone cams of the girl getting into it, but I wasn't able to find them online...
