New US Cyber-Security Czar has no cyber-security experience
The Bush Administration has finally filled the long-vacant "cyber-security czar" -- with a guy who has no experience with cyber-security (though he seems a decent sort).
By all accounts, Beckstrom is neither a cyber-security expert nor a Washington insider. But his private-sector background and published writings emphasize a decentralized approach to managing large organizations.Link (via Schneier)

maybe his first task on Day 1 should be taking a good long read at donotreply.com, especially the part that says, "When you give any private information to anyone, remember, they are idiots."
Par for the course for the Bush mis-administration.
The mind boggles.
Of course, the next thing on Bush's to-do list will be to give the guy a medal.
The only experience you need in this administration is saying "Yes Sir, what color?" I remember how Bush beamed with pride when Fredo, I mean Gonzales, lied to Congress to cover for Bush's ass.
Wow. He wasn't even first “czar” of an Arabian horse association.
Note how there are so few comments on this news story-- nobody is surprised at the ineptitude of Bush anymore. I'd like to make a snarkier comment, or perhaps some kind of jokey pun, but I just sigh and pour myself another glass of whatever liquor is available. But I'll give it a try.
George W. Bush: he got a straight C-average from high school through college, he spent most of the 70's drunk, he ran several failing companies, was part-owner of a losing ball club, and a one-term governor of TX. How are we supposed to tell our kids "if you study and work hard maybe someday YOU can become president" when we have a shining example of the exact opposite?
What kid wants to be president? "If you study marketing and work out hard, you can be a rich pop star and look hot when you're 50."
How long was the post open?
How many "more qualified" candidates were willing to take the cut in pay, the long, thankless hours and face the reality that the next president would, in all likelyhood replace them within 12 months of starting?
He maynot be your dream candidate, but I'm with Corey - he seems like a nice enough fellow, and I'll add two more things - he has credentials that qualify him for the job (IMHO, of course, opinions vary), and he will certainly be better than his predecessor (an empty chair)...
humph, you make it seem that the only appeal would be selling out to the enemy.
Did anyone expect anything less from our dear leaders in Washington?
He stands with the President -- against Roe v Wade. What other qualification is needed? God will be his judge, not you heathens.
FWIW, the former cyber-czar, Richard Clark, was a seriously awesome dude who was, by all accounts, hounded out of office by the Bush Administration, because he was a Clinton appointee (despite being a Republican).
I'm not sure I can fault this guy on his business/opertions model, to the extent that he seems to be advocating a system that is redundant enough to survive any attack. Is this just another example of George Bush's overall incompetence? Or is there something more corrupt going on here? Are we in a possition (in the USA) where we can trust anything this tyrant says or does? He's a corrupt liar, after all.
He should get along swimmingly with Ted "series of tubes" Stevens. I wonder which of them will pick up the mouse and say "hello, computer" into it first.
I'm sure the czar will do a "heckuva job" just like all the other people willing to work with/for mr. bush.
As long as he's willing to tell mr. bush EXACTLY what he expects to hear, he'll be just fine.
And get a medal to boot!
Damn, double posting - apologies.
