When I recently had a batch of patches produced I saw that some embroiders offered GITD thread.

I inquired about using this for highlights on my design, and was told that for the glow thread to be effective, it should be used to cover a relatively large, solid area.

Still, this is a great price, particularly if you're using the thread for something other than embroidery .

So, how safe is this thread? Is there any radium in it? I wouldn't use it in an emergency to stitch a cut...

Nah, the sale, transport, and disposal of radioactive luminous devices is strictly regulated. Quite certain these threads aren't self-luminous, they use the kind of phosphorescent stuff that is charged up by external light: copper activated zinc sulfide, europium doped strontium aluminate, something like that. No more dangerous than your average dyes.
