Hairstylist shoots complaining customer

Lauren Newton, 28, of Washington, Pennsylvania, was getting her haircut at her stylist's home on Thursday when she complained about the way it looked. So the hairstylist shot her. Newton is apparently doing OK while the hairstylist, Monique Reed, is in jail on charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. From the Associated Press: Lauren Newton, 28, was getting her hair cut Thursday at the home of Monique Reed when the two began to argue about the style, police said.
"She (Reed) went to the bedroom, got a gun, fired a shot in the ceiling," Police Chief James Blyth said. Newton, who was trying to flee with her sister, was then shot in the lower back, he said.

Ack!

Reminder to self when getting hair cut tonight:
Keep repeating how great it looks regardless of the actual appearance.

Wow, this is over the top. Also, it my reason #2 why I don't get my hair cut anymore.

And why was someone so unstable allowed to own a gun? Oh right, in case the British invade...

Well, if she was going to get her hair done, she should have armed herself.

As Calvin put it so well... "never criticize a man with a razord". Seems this can also be applied to women with guns and unstable temperaments.

It's a damn haircut you freaks!

Good thing I don't get haircuts!

This happened near me (I'm in Pittsburgh), and I thought this was quite amusing. What kind of bad hairday results in getting shot by your stylist?

I'd like to hear the hairdresser's side of the story. Although I'm not all that surprised, really - back when I was living in San Francisco, I was walking past a bus stop as a guy was running up, trying to catch the bus that was just pulling away. The bus driver either didn't see the guy running, or just didn't bother to stop, and the guy says to me "Man, *this* is why I need a gun!"

"Guns don't shoot; people do."

I'd like to adopt a reasoned and NRA-friendly position here and just point out that if the hair stylist hadn't had that gun in the next room, then she obviously would have found some other handy means for penetrating the woman's low back with a potentially instantaneously lethal projectile.

Besides, irate hair stylists are clearly a key component in the well-regulated militia called for by the Second Amendment. Special Ops, I'd guess.

When hair stylists are outlawed, only outlaws will have hair stylists.

Considering how shockingly intolerant the people are here towards guns and gun owners

Yeah, BB is well known for hating on teh Wm. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompsons of teh world, not to mention weird art-car owners and their weird-art cars shooting guns out in a temporarily autonomous desert a la Niki De Saint Phalle. D**n, BB would REALLY hate on something like that. Especially if the weird art-car gun-toters were NEKKID. Except for a strategically-placed Blackberry.*

Honestly, do you even READ this blog on a regular basis?

If BB has it in for anybody, it is hair-stylists.

Which is why those chianti-sipping wifi-phreaking eCoast liberals are lucky they're in cyberabad instead of in PA where we take hairstyles SERIOUISLY.

*if M2K were still around this would have been a photoshoot in 2003, I'm sure.

It's amazing how much contempt can build up... and how few never talk about it, but act and try to cease and shut down their own train of thought. It's interesting that they are trying to shut down their own muteness. We should open up more, and good things will happen, even though the dialogue might get twisted in the beginning. It's hard to find a response, when all the talk is empty of content, and questioning ridiculed.

Who, funnily enough (although maybe not so much for her), shot and killed his 'roommate' while playing a drunken game of William Tell. Guns don't kill people. Badly placed apples kill people.

Note to self: Me loaded or gun loaded. Not both.

JJR1971, it may be that we're going to argue about guns, but we're not going to have JLBraun's gun argument, and we're not going to follow the lead of your first comment, either.

Why? Because you've posted a long comment that isn't a reply to the entry, or to the other people who've already commented in that thread. Your comment is addressed to JLBraun and the dreary, endless, generic internet gun argument. That argument is welcome to go on elsewhere, but I'm not having it here.

Don't even try to claim I'm doing this because I'm unfriendly to guns. I'm not, and I've got pictures to prove it. I think there are some interesting and important issues bound up in the whole gun thing. What you don't understand is that the vast majority of the online world loathes the standard gun argument -- not because it's about guns, but because it's the dreary standard perpetual ongoing internet gun argument.

At moments like this, what I really want is that filter an XKCD site came up with that doesn't allow people to post non-unique sentences.

Aside from that, you're free to argue about guns. That's fine. But if you want to keep your vowels, talk to the people around you. Don't launch straight into a canned paragraph about what British crime rates have done, when nobody was talking about British crime rates.

Make it new. Respond to what other people are saying.

JLBraun, you're not allowed to post about guns on Boing Boing at all until you've posted a number of comments on other subjects equal to the number of comments you've already posted about guns.

dum-dums with glitter?

Can you buy dum-dum slugs? Seems questionable. Just basic rounds for a 38, a 357 magnum and a 45. I guess that you could include glitter in a shotgun shell.

take a knife, set the bullet on the table, gingerly cut a shallow cross in the nose of the lead. The economy version. Oh, and final step: get caught by the other side with them and be slowly cut to pieces with bayonets. Spray glue and glitter for the tip, mask the brass with tape.

Kathmandu, 1990. We got into town just after the Communists had blown up the police station, so there was martial law and curfew. Every evening, troop transports would roll through the city dumping soldiers to enforce the curfew. We didn't head for the hotel fast enough and I got slightly poked. No real injury, but a good drinking story. Between that and being seized and interned in Cairo (which was a much bigger deal), I have a hard time finding travel companions.

bullets count as guns

Take a look at this

The British and the Japanese seem to get along just fine with handgun ownership illegal. And their per capita death rate for shootings is drastically lower (big surprise there).

Whereas in America any idiot wannabe hairdresser who works out of a house can apparently own a gun. There should be some sort of a psychological assessment and/or a three month training class before anyone can go out there and buy a gun. And the penalty for losing a gun ,even getting one stolen, ( think gun safe) should be never to be allowed to purchase one again. The whole process of obtaining ownership should be time consuming and expensive, in my opinion - for everyone.

And for those right to bear arms freaks out there, just join the National Guard already and bear all the arms that you want. With the government owning tanks and artillary, I don't think there's anything at Sam's Club I can buy that's going to protect me from that (think Waco, please) .

We should be a Nation of laws, not a Nation of guns.
