Blogging from TED 2008

I'll be blogging from TED 2008 this year, held in beautiful Monterey CA. I drove up from Los Angeles and snapped a few photos along the way.

BLT and homemade minestrone soup was the $7.45 Wednesday lunch special at Ellen's Pancake house, a sparking clean and good cafe in Buellton, CA (a little town 140 miles north of Los Angeles). The workers are friendly and the place is filled with locals. Ellen's is much better than Anderson's Pea Soup across the street where I usually robotically-yet-regretfully eat when I'm passing through.

Mark, I wasn't able to view your Flikr set until I signed in. Also, I was told that these pictures of thrift stores and restaurants fell outside my filter limits! :-)

You might want to check the permissions / settings so more folks can enjoy them.

Awww...Pea Soup Anderson's is a must-stop for the kitsch alone. I've only had the soup once and it wasn't bad. Tastes like every other bowl of pea soup I've ever had. We'll have to try Ellen's next time.

What I'd like to know is how do you finagle your way into something like TED? Friends in high places?

It's all great watching TED talk videos after the fact and reading attendant's blogs, but it's really the networking opportunity TED presents that's fascinating.

On a side note, what with the combined IQ of the gathering, I hope the terr'ists don't get any ideas! Hey, I'm just sayin, y'know! :-P

I can't wait to see all the talks and I'm not even attending, but here is one they will stream live on 2-28-08 http://shannonpatrick17.blogspot.com/2008/02/2008-tedprize-live-webcast-scheduled-to.html

I'm really looking forward to your coverage Mark, looks like there will be lots of other interesting people covering it as well: http://blog.ted.com/2008/02/whos_blogging_t.php
so we should all be able to get tons of insight and info.

Also whats the big deal with the WorldWide Telescope, is it really that awesome, I think the very fact that they are kinda of alluding to that it will not be for the general public "free resource to the astronomy and education communities" seems kinda lame, or is it that it is some kind of resource hog that will not even be able to run on a current home pc.

The people who run TED kindly gave me a press pass to cover the event. I'm really enjoying it!

oooh! Listen to Mr. Bleedin Toff now! All hoity-toity, a cuppa of tea,lad te da!

Serious envy issues you are creating you realize.

And that sandwich clocks in at about 0.1% of the cost of attending TED...truly a conference for the rest of us. Way to trickle down, MF!

I haven't permission either.

No soup for me.

Even in the crummiest cafes a BLT and soup like this would be about £8.00 in the UK which is about $16 in the US. You don't know how lucky you are having such low cost food.

Heh. Mark is turning into Agent Cooper.

What's that big white thing in the bowl of soup?

The most interesting thing about this discussion is focus on the food! I couldn't imagine paying any more than $5 dollars for that BLT and Soup, homemade or not.

So close to the Bay Area, will there be any sightings over the weekend? I owe you at least 3 martinis, and I am positive Null owes ya more....

This delicious looking dish would cost you around £10.00 in London. That's $20.00 guys..

I'm sure there are fans of Pea-Soup Andersons' out there but I'm not one. I was dragged there on a trip to a conference at Yosemite a number of years ago and it was the worst of Pennsylvania Dutch Turnpike kitsch. Touristy atmosphere and decor masking really average(or less) food. Just bleah...

Blake, a $5 BLT and soup? I don't think I've *ever* seen one that cheap. Not even in a fast food place.

Kuanes, I instinctively read that as "sparkling." I kind of like "sparking" better. Like it's so clean, it's gonna shock ya'!

That looks absolutely mouthwatering. I may have to take lunch early today.

The last time I ate at Pea Soup Anderson's was at that very one in Buellton. Not only is the tourist-trap atmosphere the exact opposite of charming, it was THE worst food I have ever had. I ordered a grilled cheese, which was positively horrid, and the pea soup was bland as all hell.

I would have never thought it possible to mess up a grilled cheese, but apparently someone found a way.

For the wine aficionados, Buellton is also the home of The Hitching Post, made famous in the movie Sideways for it's awesome Highliner Pinot. The food, sadly, isn't as good as the wine.

If you're in London, don't go looking for a BLT sandwich, for god's sake, get a fast food shawerma for 2 pounds 50 pence. (I.E., five fucking bucks.) They're huge and insanely good, succulent meat and hot sauce wrapped with a variety of cabbage. Like so good that'll be the first thing I do next time I'm there. San Francisco has its killer burrito, London has its killer shawerma.

Is that sarcasm, #22? I bet it's sarcasm. Probably sarcasm.

I, for one, welcome the soup 'n sandwich coverage. Mainstream media never discusses sandwiches or their too oft ignored partners in crime, soups.
