It's hard to understand why this "beauty mask" from the April, 1933 ish of Modern Mechanix never caught on:

Reminds me of the head gear I wore as a kid.(For you Brits, I'm talking about braces for my teeth. Yes, we straighten teeth in America.) At least I only had to wear it at night! Oh, the pain.
I've seen medieval torture instruments that looked more comfortable. Maybe it's still being used in Third World countries.

This reminds me of some traditional African ornamentation of which I've seen pictures, but as I have no idea which tribe or what it's called I doubt I could find a picture online.
I think I understand how this works-- she takes it off, and suddenly she 100% prettier.
I believe Travolta wore a similar headpiece in Battlefield Earth. The results speak for themselves!
