World's smallest bodybuilder

Aditya "Romeo" Dev, just 2-feet 9-inches tall, is said to be "the world's smallest bodybuilder." The 19-year-old, who lives in Punjab, was honored by the Guinness Book of Records in 2006. From The Telegraph (portion of photo by Barcroft Media):
Romeodevvv-1 While most dwarfs have large heads compared to their bodies, Romeo is perfectly proportioned, and despite his diminutive stature has triceps, biceps, calves and thighs that would make many a full-grown man blush...

"I've been training as a bodybuilder for the last two years and by now I think I must be the strongest dwarf in the world," said Romeo.

Romeo is famous in his home country, and his father has spoken of his pride in his son's determination to overcome any difficulties in his path. "He has never been bothered at being so small. He has no inferiority complex. He is the jewel of our family."

That little person does not look like a dwarf. Love the hair.

Right on! A victory story for people with disabilities... unlike this story about the quadriplegic man dumped from his wheelchair by police.

Seriously, this guy rocks for traveling back in time from 2996.

... DAMN YOU WOOLIE FOR BEATING ME TO IT!

This looks like some classic Weekly World News photoshop shenanigans to me...

Now that's how the real champ looks like. I find it admirable how determined he is. Very inspiring chap, indeed!

He lived a particularly sad life after the Stature Act of 3007. Eventually he relocated to Ganymede and scraped out a living doing interior dent work on ventilator ducts.

SHOOP DA WHOOP?

I think this a perfect example of when actual photos look more like Photoshops than photoshops do themselves.

Daddy, I want one!

"despite his diminutive stature has triceps, biceps, calves and thighs that would make many a full-grown man blush."

I think Romeo may take exception to that. He is "full-grown." Just not "full-size." :)

I'm a full-grown man, and his triceps, biceps, calves and thighs do not make me blush. I mean, good for him for being in decent shape despite what amounts to a serious disability, but come on.

I bet that cop from Baltimore would really love pushing this guy around.

According to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the further back you go in time, the smaller you get. The empty space near one's electrons compress. For example, I used to be 7 feet tall in 2020.

Sorry to ruin your fun, but I fixed my typeo. Thanks!

I'm really humbled and impressed with both he and his father. Great story.

@ #3, that is a seriously messed up story. Just more examples of the cops being retards, huh?

He's not a DWARF--he's a MIDGET. Big difference. Midgets are proportioned like children, because they stop growing in childhood due to a lack of HGH. You don't see a lot of midgets anymore--except maybe in places like India--because nowadays we give 'em the missing HGH and they grow to full size. Dwarfism is an entirely different condition having to do with inhibition of the growth plates of the bones. I'm pretty sure midgets don't like being called dwarfs, and vice versa.

That's just disturbing.

Isn't that the same guy who plays Wang Wang? I love that guy.

@#18
I'm pretty sure NOBODY prefers being called a Midget, as the term is no longer politically correct, and from what I understand, his condition is called pituitary dwarfism or primordial dwarfism. The most common type of dwarfism, wherein the limbs and skull are disproportionate, is achondroplasia. Hasn't anyone ever watched "Little People, Big World"?

So let me get this straight...this guy does weight training even though he is only 2' 9" tall? The mind reels! Next you're going to tell me he has hobbies and enjoys watching TV after work, just like us normal humans. You go little fella!

Seriously, this story is pandering, insulting horse crap. Here's a clue: if Guinness World Records takes an interest in your achievement, there is a 90% probability that your achievement is nothing more than a titillating novelty act designed to shill $30 hardcover books to the lowest common denominator during the Christmas season. Nothing personal Romeo.

Whoa people, calling someone a m**get is uncool. It's also really uncool in the write-up to continue the war between little people who are proportioned like tall people and people who do not have the same proportions. It would literally be like writing that an African-American person had really light skin. Both the Boing Boing write up and the comments here are seriously ignorant.

Take a look at this

I was unaware that the word "midget" was derogatory. Why does it convey a negative connotation? Or is it just "not PC"? Such as "African-American" is the politically correct term, but my friends just refer to themselves as "black".

Take a look at this

way cool, although I am a little bit (sorry, pun not intended) skeptical of his father's claim that, "He has never been bothered at being so small. He has no inferiority complex. He is the jewel of our family." If he had no inferiority complex, why is he into bodybuilding (to the point of having his glamour photo taken in the gym?) But I say I'm only a little bit (sorry again) skeptical because he doesn't appear to be obsessive over his bodybuilding.

But maybe he hasn't hit the 'roids, yet.

Food for thought: muscle dysmorphia, a psychological disorder that afflicts obsessive bodybuilders who always think they are small, no matter how overly-bulked-up they are...look it up.

@DCER (#23), The text that I wrote made no reference to dwarfs, "midgets," or body proportions. The language that you're referring to is a quotation from the article in The Telegraph.

If The Telegraph article is insulting to little people, I'm sure the editors of the newspaper would be interested in hearing that.

Take a look at this

And for everybody else:

2 ft 9 in = 83.82 centimeters

That IS kinda small. Smallish.

Take a look at this

If a midget is not a dwarf, but "midget" is now uncool, then does "little person" refer to both midgets and dwarfs? I never know how to offend someone in a really up-to-date fashion. How about just calling this little guy a Mini-man?

Take a look at this

"Little person/people" is the term persons of short stature prefer.

This is no small accomplishment. Romeo stands head and shoulders above his competition, and surely will reach new heights in the years to come.

Sorry :D

as for #25: maybe he's bodybuilding because he wants to? why does ANYONE bodybuild? Do all bodybuilders have inferiority complexes, or are you assuming that must be the case in this case because he's small?

Check the Wikipedia entry for Primordial Dwarfism, which is a separate issue from mere lack of HGH.

Recently the National Geographic channel ran a documentary called The Science of Dwarfism, which profiled an American primordial dwarf teenager who was qualifying as a karate (IIRC brown) belt.

There's no such things as a "midget", god. That's like saying " 'Nigger' is a certain kind of black person!" Use the M-word in the presence of a little person and you're liable to get kicked.

They're ALL dwarves, people. There's just different kinds of dwarves. This man appears to be a primordial dwarf, as other commenters have pointed out.

Take a look at this

A few things:

1) Primordial Dwarfism is not caused by a pituitary problem. It is strictly genetic, and most recent information is that it impacts DNA repair within all cell of the person's body (hence fewer cells survive in every single organ, making the person propotionally smaller)

2) The whole 'midget' issue is one that was caused by the derogatory use of the word. When someone wants to insult someone smaller than average, they usually use the word 'midget' in a way meant to be derogatory (much like the way 'retard' is used). So, people with short stature disorders began to dislike the term way back in the 60s, and it eventually became politically incorrect to use it

3) Finally, if anyone who reads this site has any contact with Aditya Dev, please, please ask him to contact either myself (through www.primordialdwarfism.com) or Dr. Michael Bober at the duPont hospital for Children in Delaware at 302-651-4000. There are very serious complications and side effects to Primordial Dwarfism (including a propensity to fatal anuerysm) that he may not be aware of, but which can be treated.

Thanks,
Doug White
