Like a risible American Idol contestant or a train-wrecking celebrity flip-out, an over-the-top drag queen's performance attracting attention -- all sorts of attention -- is neither accidental nor deplorable.

Of course, it's possible that this video was shot surreptitiously, or stolen from a private stash; but my presumption is that it was meant to be shared.

That said, I still prefer the chilling performance art of the Goddess Bunny / Sandie Crisp.

Interesting. I've never pegged Xeni as other than female, but I definitely think of her as "one of the guys". She has traveled to a lot of places that would frighten most people (yes, I include LA) and talked to a lot of people who would frighten us, too. So I guess that I think of her as brave and forthright. But I don't see why those aren't womanly qualities. She doesn't have to be XY to be a kick-ass adventuress.

There are a lot of factors here. Ridiculing little people is malicious and also stupid. Same thing for ridiculing transvestites and transsexuals. However, La Pequeña appears to be a drag queen, which is different from a transvestite, and also appears to be performing, which is different than trying to get through life unmolested. I've been a drag queen. When you step on stage (metaphorically speaking), you take your chances.

I think people are getting a little worked up over this. Did I laugh? Yes: it was hilarious. Was I laughing at her? No: I was laughing at her performance. I love drag shows. But I especially love the drag shows with the scraggliest queens, the ones who know they look kind of ridiculous but revel in that fact. They show us that appearances ultimately don't matter: it is our character. Now, if I saw La Pequena walking down the street, I wouldn't point or laugh; I'd acknowledge her with a polite nod, just like I do with everyone else.
