UK artist Jodie Carey creates dark, sweet sculptures that, she says, "offer beauty but at the same time confront us with the ugliness of life." Above left, "Untitled Monument," a cake of bones sculpted from plaster, steel, wire, and sugarpaste icing. Above right, "Femur," a bone and flower plaque entirely made from icing. Not seein' the ugly here. In fact, I think these (and the similar items at her site)are decidedly un-ugly.

The full quote of this sentence:
"...I want my work to question the way we look at the world, to offer beauty but at the same time confront us with the ugliness of life."...'

She is using this imagery to remind us that life can be ugly, not that the work is ugly.

Ex. the beautiful wedding cake made from bones. A wonderful symbol of marriage, but the reality is that most fail.
