Clarion workshop now accepting applications

I'm still on paternity leave, but a couple of matters have come up that are too important to wait (important enough to blog while my daughter naps on my chest!). Here's one from the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' workshop, on whose Board I sit (I'm also a graduate and a former instructor):
Applications are now being accepted for the 2008 Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers' Workshop at U.C. San Diego. Established in 1968 by Robin Scott Wilson, Kate Wilhelm, and Damon Knight, Clarion is the oldest workshop of its kind and is widely recognized as a premier proving and training ground for aspiring writers of fantasy and science fiction. The 2008 workshop will take p lace from June 29 to August 9 on the UCSD campus. This year's faculty features Kelly Link, James Patrick Kelly, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Neil Gaiman, Nalo Hopkinson, and Geoff Ryman. Scholarship aid is available. Deadline for applications is March 1. "to blog while my daughter naps on my chest!"

I am having difficulty understanding how you're doing this without using your daughter as a laptop or keyboard rest. Unless you're using a PDA of some sort...

VELOCITY GIRL: It's entirely possible that Cory is blagging from an altitude so high that he is no longer affected by the earth's gravity, in which case such a set up would be perfectly feasible.

Or typing with his toes.

I lie in bed with my cat on my chest and my laptop on my legs sometimes. The key is getting the cat to keep his head down. As babies don't really have fully functioning necks at this stage in the game I would say Cory is pretty golden.

Phreatic, I do something similar but sitting up on the couch with the cat on my lap and my laptop perched on my knees. Unfortunately (in some ways) my lap is not very ample so kitty 'readjusts' trying to get more lap room .. which makes the computer more and more precarious.

You don't have to lie down flat on your back for a newborn to fall asleep on your chest. A snugli or sling makes it a little easier for the adult to move around, but newborns sleep very deeply.

I've done this. Two or three pillows under my upper back and head, baby on my chest, two pillows under my knees, ankles crossed for support. Arms encircle the baby to reach the laptop which is near 45 degrees, front edge resting on my waist, screen bent to vertical. It's comfortable, but forget about reaching for anything.
