Chair made of melted ball of rope
Tom Price's "Meltdown Chair" is made by heaping up a big cuddly pile of nylon rope, then melting an Eames-ish chair-shape into it. Don't miss the video of the hot former-on-nylon action.

This chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquify as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. No additional material has been added to make the seat - it is all made from melted rope.

Holy Cannoli!! I think the noodly one would approve of this sculpture of his likeliness. I would love to have one made in a pale wheat colorway paired with two meatball side tables; to be aptly named the Marinara set. RAmen!
I think I'm turning into my mother.
The first thought I had about this chair made of rope was; "Wouldn't this be hard to clean when it gets dusty or greasy?"
what is that? a thousand bucks of rope to produce something that looks cool but is probably only comfortable to sit in for three minutes?
Probably easier to clean than most easy chairs--just take it outside and pressure wash it.
I sure hope whoever made this wore a vapor-quality respirator--burning plastic is nasty stuff to breathe!
Eames fiberglass shell chairs are reasonably comfortable to sit in. It's all in how it's shaped. You're not gonna want to lounge in it, but they're good for conference rooms and the like. This is probably a good waiting room chair.
just don't drop your car keys
Waste of good rope.
The Eames chair is a somewhat upright design, and a more laid back lounger design might work better here. But overall?- It's a concept piece that does not look as though it would function well as a chair, nor does it score well as a piece of sculpture. The chair would work better without the rope, the rope ball would look better without the chair.
Thumbs down.
I agree with #7 a "Waste of good rope."
Weaving something fantastic out of the rope would be cool. I'd rather have a lovely light chair and the rope on a spool.
If you turn it upside down you might be able to use it as a footstool....
What you say !!
This is fucking awesome ! I wonder what other blocks of stuff one could melt to make chairs and other furniture?
You guys sure worry about wasting rope. Mental scars from the Bo'sun's mate's keelhauling?
lost bondage opportunities
what kind of toxic fumes were released from the burning of nylon? Couldn't have been too great a contribution to the air around his studio.
Well, Cory, I'm against wasting useful stuff in order to make mediocre stuff.....
As for mating with the bosun?
gak!
I visited the linked site, seems the guy had a fairly cool idea, but then failed to turn it into anything worthy of the effort and resources he expended. One of those things that looks pretty good in a second year art-school show, but not so good when done by a graduate.
The idea has promise, I'm just criticising the way he uses it.
