China's Ice and Snow World 2007

R Todd King once again visited the annual Ice and Snow World, a beautiful winter event in Harbin, China. Stunningly huge and complex ice architecture -- pagodas, towers, churches, a massive Buddha, even a restaurant -- is all illuminated from within. Very, er, cool. Link (Thanks, Jim Leftwich!)

This made me think of the Sapporo Snow Festival:

It's Feb 5 - 11 this year.

It won't glow like that for long. I give it an hour before the air polution coats the whole thing with a black slime.

W000T -- it reminds you of the Sapporo because it's a rip-off of the Sapporo, which has gone on since before WWII.

It really is shameless how the Chinese are determined to copy everyone else. It's a rip-off culture, on every level.

The Chinese borrow from everyone. Other cultures have borrowed a hell of a lot from the Chinese.

Jeff, have you got your grumpy boots on today?

As you know, Teresa, the Chinese were blogging with Movable Type back in the 11th century.

Japanese culture has copied tons of things from the Chinese and others. For example: Kanji.

On-topic, this is amazing and looks like a first-person shooter level come to life. Less the shooter, plus the cool imagery.

Great pictures, but this is actually last year's festival. The 2008 festival just opened two weeks ago. The main snow sculptures were 'The differences between French and Chinese Customs' themed this year, not Canada.

The main snow sculpture was still probably 30 meters tall and longer than I could accurately guess. Plus an entire snow village.

The ice part was again a neon-encrusted playland of slippery ice with unsupervised children sliding underfoot.
