Boing Boing Pirates "toddler" toy

Genius babies sells a toy called "Boing, Boing, Pop'n Pirates" -- "Pirates will delight toddlers who are fascinated by cause-and-effect play. Three wooden pirates (each with a patch on his eye) fit into three slots in a sturdy red ship, then pop up and down on springs when pushed by little fingers." Delight toddlers? Hot damn -- this thing delights me! Link (Thanks, Justin!)

Somehow, this ties into Cory's recent post on DRM.
pastel pencil corsan :d
Whack-A-Mole for babies, without the dangerous mallet?
Hmm, I don't see a size listed. I hope it's bigger than it looks to me. I'd hate to see the headline, "Toddler killed by Boing Boing Pirates!"
Weebles wobble but these Arrrrs-holes NEVAH go soft on you!
A young girl's wet dream, methinks; Johnny Depp and perpetually hard.
No mattah wheah ya puts 'em, lads and lasses! Arrrrrrrrrrgh!
I like that they specify that indeed each pirate does have an eye patch. I wonder if there is pirate merchandise out there with a tiny disclaimer like, "Actual pirate does not wear eyepatch."
I'm curious how much kids (of all ages) like these toys that are aesthetically pleasing for the parents but don't seem to have much...personality. Like those very attractively designed pull-toy dogs. I mean, they look awesome, but I'm not sure I would have developed much of an emotional attachment to it as a kid. But it might be just me.
Can you lose an eye from lead poisoning?
There was a child in my family that just loved the pull dog toy. Was one of those ones with the crooked axles, so it bounced up and down when it was pulled, and the tail was a spring with a red bit of plastic on it...The little one would play with her stuffed toy puppies at home, but when they went out, the pull toy came with. And I have to admit, seeing a 2 year old walking through the mall with one of those trailing behind is pretty damn cute.
I think the Pirates would become teething toys for the younger set, and the older ones might be a little dissapointed that they didn't transform into something else, but this is probably a happy choice for those who are put off by all the poisonous plastics coming out of China. Assuming it isn't painted with lead paint!
I agree, the toy is very cool. My 19-month-old would love it. I have to point out the two items borrowed from Disney, however:
1. The line "a pirate's life for me" is from the Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride and movies theme song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)". Why did they bother to write it on the ship? It's not like it adds anything. The target audience for this can't read, yet. It adds a cheesy stolen element to an otherwise fine toy.

2. The article's link points to they toy's page at Genius Babies, who stole their own name and logo from Baby Einstein, a Disney property.

Also, since this is about the toy. Jack Rabbit Creations also makes a Boing Boing Ducks and a Boing Boing Mice. Both are nice, but not as cool as the pirates.

Whaaaaaaat?
When I get them, I am going to name each one, hmm looks like I'll need a doubleshot o' pirates for a complete set of Boingers...
This is just too much, I'm on the floor!
I a kid --doesn't-- joke to death on one of those little boingers, I'll be surprises.
I predict they'll sell ten times as many of these as they projected, most of them to middle-aged geeks. :)
Now you just need to involve Steampunk, Daleks, or Unicorns and its a true Boing Boing meme.
Uh, they're pegs!
Pirates, pegs...
