Happy 90th, Arthur C Clarke!

Hey, it's Sir Arthur C Clarke's 90th birthday on December 16th, and the Sri Lanka Astronomical Association is collecting birthday wishes from Sir A's many fans, admirers and friends. Thilina sez,
Today, the Clarke Orbit has over 330 satellites. Sir Arthur C. Clarke, a science-fiction author, inventor, and futurist, simply a greate mind celebrates his 90th birth anniversary on 16th of December, 2007.

In 1959, he founded the Ceylon Astronomical Association (now known as Sri Lanka Astronomical Association). As the current General Secretary of the Association, I'm honored to run an association founded by him. And as a big fan of his writings and admirer of his work, I have put up a blog where every one could wish him for his 90th birth day.

If you are a friend, colleague, fan or simply an earthling who admires work of Sir Arthur Clarke, please write your greetings and good wishes on the blog.

Perhaps this rev of the odometer is an appropriate time for me to recommend his fantastic book, Childhood's End. It's about aliens who nanny the Earth into a new age of splendour and acceptance, but still feel mankind is not yet ready to look upon their faces. A thoughtful and optimistic book about making difficult choices.

btw, Google tells me that IOR and AOG are aeronautical abbreviations for "Immediate Operational Requirement" and "Aircraft On Ground". But can anyone please explain how that would relate to an desk inbox?

The guy on the right looks *exactly* like Alfonso Hermida, a custom guitar pedal maker and all around cool dude. Interesting.

I didn't know this guy was Cylon! They can fool anybody! I wonder how many copies there are of him running around. I wish I knew how to contact Galctica about this.

When I was about 12 I once spent a happy few days staying at a beach bungalow in Hikkaduwa part owned by Mr. Clarke, there I read a set of the Space Odyssey novels belonging to my Grandad (Also Arthur C.) but the pinnacle of the experience looking back at it is playing on A.C.C's beloved table tennis table. Up until recently he still played a mean game. My uncle swore that at eighty five and in a wheelchair he was still unbeatable. Happy Birthday to him!

I have just arrived back from Colombo Sri Lanka where the last of the giants in science fiction was put to rest. I met with Sir Arthur's brother Fred and his daughter and niece. My friend Nalaka the office executive gave me a wonderful tour of Sir Arthurs office and the grounds. I went to the grave of Sir Arthur and wished him a journey of peace for eternity...this little blue planet has lost someone who will live forever as long as imagination and science exist.

"All Best Wishes, Sir Arthur."
Your Friend.
