Pop-up market in Bangkok

Popupmarkt Telstar Logistics' Todd Lappin shot spotted a great short video taken in Bangkok of a train briefly interrupting an open air market set up right across the tracks. The market's "recovery" is the best part. Kevin Kelly posted about the clip at Street Use.

That's great, I wonder how many times a day the train comes through.

I saw a similar situation at a market in Shanghai with a police "raid." Bustling commerce to ghost town & back to bustling commerce, all within 7 minutes.

Notice the things on the ground which are only 1 foot tall or so. Apparently the shopkeepers know EXACTLY where to put them and how high they can be so they can remain where they are without the train hitting them. I'm sure there is a learning curve that is very unforgiving...

Very fascinating. It looks like that insurance ad that shows the transformation after a car wreck or hospital stay.

love living in bangkok. 50 cent smoothies, or for a quarter, waffle on a stick with a hotdog inside. would be ideal if i wasn't across the street from a red-light-type area.

This is also a great idea for all those overcrowded western cities! Any creative ideas or designs?

When I was in the Philippines this happened every day. There was literally a row of makeshifthouses on each side of the traintracks whose front doors were just inches from the path of the train. Twice a day a few minutes before the train was due people took their home-made fishcarts, wagons, etc. off of the train tracks and everybody stood to the side to avoid the oncoming vehicle.

Drunks often fall asleep on the tracks and are crushed.
