Make 12 on sale today

The latest issue of MAKE magazine, Vol. 12, went on sale today. (I am editor-in-chief of MAKE.)
200711200858 Make Vol 12 features our special section on digital arts and crafts called "Upload," where you'll learn how to take infrared photographs, shoot movies with custom backgrounds, and make fun-to-watch slideshows of your digital family photos. You'll also learn how to make an extremely loud air whistle, a solar-powered xylophone, and a TV remote control that's powered by your muscles. As usual, you'll find plenty of other exciting how-to projects inside.

Today? That's odd; my newstand had them out when I was there last Sunday! (PS, the solar Xylo looks really neato!)

Hmm. I haven't seen mine in the mail yet. That makes me sad.

Thanks Bunnyman2112. Some bookstores get them early, but all newsstands that carry MAKE should have them by today.

There is some kind of log=in problem.

I got mine last week! I was planning that evening on sending Mark an email wondering if there was schedule problem . . . and there was issue #12, with no warning. Neat.

Mark, I saw you at the Felt Club event in LA this past Sunday, and I felt compelled to point you out to my significant other. "That's him," I whispered nodding toward you, and pointing at volume 10.

I considered this pointing-out the rest of the day, and how and you and the other BBers have entered into my awareness. I hesitate it to call it celebrity or famous, but there are increasingly aspects of both.

The celebrity aspect was indicated when my significant other asked why I didn't go say hello to you. I told her I say "hello" about ten times a day on the BB server log.

Her question made me consider the act of introducing oneself to people you know something of, but who know nothing of you. Why would I do such a thing? I receive your creative output daily, need I also need to interrupt your conversations with people you do know only to say "HI! I know who you are! You're cool!"

No, I don't need to do that. It would be rude, pointless, embarrassing. But celebrities have to deal with exactly that, all of the time. They have to deal with strangers who feel compelled to speak to them, to smell their odors, to enter their space and absorb their magic.

It could be web-borne celebrity engenders a more respectful admiration, or maybe you're not yet famous enough. Perhaps like Oprah, you should be on every cover?
