House keeps AT&T on the hook for spying on America, Senate next?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Danny O'Brien sez, ""Word from the EFF on the Hill: The House just passed their FISA reform bill without clauses that would give telecoms like AT&T immunity from prosecution for assisting in illegal wiretapping programs. No vote yet in the Senate, but a version of the bill without immunity passed Judiciary, and rumors say that's the version that Dem. Senate leadership is going to put forward for Senate vote." When they finally drag them to justice part of their punishment should be freeing the iPhone.

Why? Did AT&T twist Steve Jobs arm?
Did they twist the arm of any of the iZombies that agreed to support AT&T with their $$$?

It seems like good bills always get killed in the Senate (as I suspect this one will). Why is that?

Don't believe this, they've pulled this game on us before. They are masters at kabuki theater. Do not trust that there is no secret under the table deal that will will grant immunity at a later time. It'll be done quietly, behind the scenes.

Because your needs and interests do not matter.

I have no hope of seeing anybody go to jail for anything these days. Even if we get some of these assholes and collaborators, "someone" will just commute the sentence.

Oh that logo gave me a chuckle -- nice work!

Bills get shot down in the Senate because there are a hundred senators. It's easier to control and bribe a hundred politicians than the far more populated House of Representatives.

I'm not basing this on anything other than Wikipedia.

I was thinking that maybe because there are only two per state, they have more power than Representatives, but your idea works for me, too.

Fight cynicism about government. It encourages you to give away an institution that belongs to you.

What a great quote. I have to say some level of cynicism is necessary to fuel critical thinking however this quote reflects an often lost perspective that it is OUR government. At times a terribly incorrect line is drawn that there is a separation between government and the people, we're one in the same.

If you find fault in the public institutions you find fault in yourself, simplistic I know but there is a level of truth to it.

Now the hard part, how to fix it.

"Fight cynicism about government. It encourages you to give away an institution that belongs to you." That is indeed a superb way of putting it.
