Making a Star Trek phaser with blue diode laser
Kipkay bought a model of the Star Trek phaser and installed a blue diode laser in it. Here's his video of how he made it.
Update:
In the comments, Paul D says: "There was a long Slashdot discussion on this a while back, with a lot of informative links. Basically, the laser in a Blu-ray player or DVD player is strong enough to permanently fry your retina in less time than it takes for the blink response to kick in. These are seriously dangerous, people."

One of these would go nicely with your laser.
If that beam is strong enough to scatter off of dust particles in the open air, then this is probably not a very safe thing to mess with.
Do not look in to laser with remaining eye.
...Call me when you get the wattage output high enough to melt tires. I've got a strong desire to mete justice out on punks in pimped-out rides who think it's cute to cut you off and then slam on the breaks just because you refuse to get out of their way when you're already going 85 in the fast lane. Seeing those shitheads flipping end over end into a ditch with their spinner wheels going in all directions would make my day even if my parents had just died!
i have to say that if someone is going faster than you, and you see them coming far enough away, you should move over.
Because even though 85 is fast, everyone has differing opnions, and when you come up on someone while you're going 85, someone in front of you is going, "i'm already going 5 over, i'm not moving."
slower traffic to the right.
Now, if we could only scratch-build either a tractor beam, or maybe a transporter .....

OMG!!!!11!1!!
DANGER! IT'S NOT 100% SAFE!
Hmmmm. Safe or indescribably cool?
I choose indescribably cool!
YMMV.
still less dangerous than a bb gun.

...Not to hijack this thread, but if I'm already going over the limit *that* much, then if you're passing me you're -seriously- going *WAY* too far over said. Or, in other words...screw them *and* anyone who sides with them.
Guess that means you, eh? :p
@Om, #s 4 and 9:
Meting out justice, huh? Your vigilantism is misguided and annoying. It's not your job to enforce traffic laws. Just get to the right as soon as you safely can and everyone (including those of us caught up in the traffic jams that ensue when the jackasses you delay mete out their own justice on *you* and your kind) will be happier.
ObOnTopic: Not even an indescribably cool (in all senses of the word) blue diode laser makes lane hogs cool.

Try that attitude on the Autobahn and they might let you out of jail in time for next Oktoberfest, if you're lucky.
You're both deciding for yourselves which laws apply to you. The difference is, the law you decided to break is actually important for highway safety.

It's indescribably cool until some dumb kid loses an eye. Then Big Brother steps in, and suddenly it's illegal to take a DVD player apart.
Amazingly apt as just today I posted for help on harvesting the laser diode from an HD-DVD set to make a handheld pointer.
It's here, if anyone's curious:

85 is not that fast, but fast-lane hogs don't seem to operate via speed limits or safety, but on selfishness and antagonism. To wit: "screw them."
Om, if you really want to screw up speeders, rig something that'll emit the same signal as a radar gun.
Gazzerman, I take it as a guiding principle that the people who "have way too much time on their hands" are the ones who post messages about how other people have way too much time on their hands.
Back to the laser:
YOU'LL PUT YOUR EYE OUT!
Had to say it.
Ok. Thread starts out sane. Off-topic aside attracts trolls. Time for one side to call the other a Nazi and be done with it.
Hiya, Roosky. Be welcome.
This thread's not a problem. It settled down and went to sleep on its own -- see the dates?
If you want the threads where there's lively conversation going on, the "don't miss" list on the front page is always a good bet. And if you have trouble posting or logging in tonight, let me know -- there've been scattered reports of trouble, and I'd like to catch that before it turns into a general problem.

If someone is passing you then you shouldn't be in the left lane. I don't care how fast you are going. I want to melt your tires while I sit behind you trying to get past.
