Beautiful animation backgrounds

200711061308

When I watch cartoons, I often study the backgrounds more that the animated characters.

This blog is devoted solely to splendid animation backgrounds going back to the early black-and-white cartoons of Disney's Ub Iwerks. What a treasure trove!

Neat.

In the same vein be sure to look at the classic backgrounds in all of the Studio Ghibli Anime and the Studio Gainax work in Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. Honneamise in particular is remarkable in that it is set on a parallel earth with nearly every detail re-imagined to be familiar enough to grasp but radically different:

I like to make backgrounds for my desktop using screen caps from Tom & Jerry, Ren & Stimpy, etc... this blog is definitely going to save me THAT headache! Thanks!

Brilliant - I've spent the last 45 minutes poring through this and making noises of awe and nostalgia at my husband. For my tastes, this is one of the loveliest things you guys have blogged in months.

I wish he would focus on more than just Disney. The Krazy Kat Homage landscapes of Philip DeGuard for the Warner Brothers Road Runner/Coyote cartoons are gorgeous.

Flying Squid - there were some Road Runner backgrounds further back in the blog (and they were just gorgeous).

On a lot of animation they have these unidimensional "cartoon characters" move around on a very nice, elaborate background. I suppose since the background stays still, they only have to draw it once and can spend some actual time on it.

Just thought it was apropos.

Tokyo's Museum of Contemporary Art just finished an show devoted to the work of Kazuo Oga, who did the backgrounds to "My Neighbor Totoro", Princess Mononoke, and "Spirited Away".

Such a great link. It's in line with one of my favorite Dumb Pastimes-- to watch only what's happening *around* the characters in TV shows and commercials.
