Gamer Gourds: HOWTO carve a Pac-o-Lantern

Why have a Jack O'Lantern this Hallowe'en when you could be carving a couple of gourds into a convincing Pac Man (Pac O'Lantern!) and ghost?

A quick, low-tech halloween project: we hollowed out a couple of miniature decorative gourds. You can get these by the bagful at the grocery store, next to the mini-pumpkins. The one on the left had a kind of wrinkly base that adapted itself well to this shape, and the one on the right had more of a conical tip that we cut off to make a flat base.

My friend Emily got 2nd place in a Somerville, MA pumpkin carving contest a week ago with Pacman themed squash.

I guess the Pacman is a run of the mill pumpkin. I am proud to say that the ghosts are patty-pan squash that I actually gave her back in July. Patty-pans rule for summer squash staying power.

As a side note...it's worth looking at the first prize pumpkin (the Hindenburg) as well.

This self-carving pumpkin video on Neatorama is pretty cool too, and you don't even have to carve it:
