whenever i make a balloon dog there isn't even a question of where the brain goes. where the ears are in this diagram, i always have a tiny little bubble, and the ears are implied. being comfortable with implied ears, i tend towards the cleft-forehead interpretation. but it is creepy.

The brain is in the ears? Surely there isn't anyone else here who visualises a balloon dog's ears as being a huge cleft forehead?
