The Ramontures - Surf cover versions of Ramone songs

I just bought this delightful collection of 16 surf-music cover versions of Ramone songs at CD Baby (in MP3 format).

The Ramonetures are the brainchild of Phantom Surfers guitar genius Mel Bergman. On this, their debut album, the band takes on the task of reinventing 16 classic Ramones tunes - in a style that would have done the Ventures proud! In other words, it's all instrumental, baby! And with fuzz guitar legend Davie Allan along for the ride, it's like a wild chopper ride through the surf of Rockaway Beach. Incredible... and a must for any Ramones fan.

Funny that the Ramones basically did sped up punk versions of oldies songs, and now a a band is doing oldies cover versions of Ramones songs.

This has been out for a few years now. Too freaky that this post showed up today as I was just thinking about this record. Allan also did a cover of 'Sheena is a Punk Rocker' with the Phantom Surfers on "Skater Hater" which rules.

In a related vein, The Nutley Brass did Muzak-style versions of Ramones songs. Bizarre and entertaining...you haven't heard Rock 'n Roll High School until you've heard it easy listening style.

The Crimson Ghosts have been doing this for years, but with the Misfits instead of the Ramones. Pretty good stuff!

I wish you hadn't linked to the Twilight Zone site. I run a small indie surf/garage label, Double Crown Records (www.dblcrown.com), and the Twilight Zone site has made several of our CD's available for free download through Rapidshare and other hosting sites. My label, as well as several other labels and bands, have been trying to get this site, as several others, to stop giving away our music (which is available on CD and through iTunes and other legit download sites). I understand the argument for making out-of-print vinyl available (although even that is technically illegal). But it really irritates me that these sites put up CD's that are still available, by labels that are struggling to survive. Sorry for the rant - I just hate to see sites like this get publicity for doing something that hurts small bands and labels.

Yo La Tengo did a brilliant cover of Blitkrieg Bop as a surf guitar instrumental on "Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo" back in the 90s.

That sucks, Double Crown. I just got rid of the link and replaced it with CD Baby's link to the CD.

I read that "Smurf cover versions"... now I'm disappointed.

I agree, and I've changed the link on Eye of the Goof to point to CD Baby as well.

It's one thing to share out-of-print vinyl that hasn't been heard in years, it's another to deliberately rip-off small labels that're trying to make obscure music available to a wider audience.
