It helps to forget the context. There's an abyss below? That's nice. It doesn't matter. What matters is the path itself: here, now, just so wide, just so long, held up by wooden crosspieces whose structural integrity is a matter of some interest. There's also the wind. Rope is good. You never know exactly what you'll step on, or how hard the wind will be blowing. If you think of the rope, think of how irritated you'll be if you fall and have to be pulled up, not how grateful you'll be if it saves you. There's just the path. Walk across it.
This also works on bridges and in tunnels. See your lane? It's the same width it always is. Do you normally swerve out of your lane and smash into nearby cars, or plunge over the curb of the sidewalk? If not -- and who would keep driving if they did? -- you shan't do it here either. It's the same lane as ever.
